well obviously there's a range at quantico, but i just read that there's a public one. it's an hour away, (as opposed to 5-10 minutes for blueridge or nra), but it appears to be a lot cheaper. is it worth my time to investigate?

Two points:
Is the difference between $12 and whatever quantico charges worth the hour or more drive? You're probably burning a couple dollars worth of gas each way, so how much are you really saving?
How in the heck to you get from Herndon to NRA or Blue Ridge in 5-10 minutes? You can't get from Fair Oaks Mall to either range in that period of time (if traffic is good, you can get to NRA, but definately not Blue Ridge).
If Quantico has a public range, nobody else knows about it. I don't know anyone that shoots there.

$6/year? That's practically free. I was expecting that much an hour. Is it actually at the base or in Quantico, Va (shows how much I know about the place, I'm assuming there's a civilian town called Quantico...).
Still, it has to be very new or there has to be a catch. I know a Marine Reservist who shot at either NRA or Blueridge. You'd think he would know about a range at/near Quantico (I'd ask, but he got recalled and sent to Iraq).

That advert is REALLY old: Quantico Shooting Club is more current. Not quite $6 a pop, though... $60/ year, wait list for civilians to get in. Ranges open on weekends (IF there's an RSO to open the range).
On the plus side, you'll get to shoot at some pretty decent rifle ranges, (range 1 is 50, 100 and 300 yds, range 4 is 100-1000yds and it's the only 1k range nearby), bunch of competitions covering just about everything except USPSA / IDPA, chance to rub elbows with Uncle Sam's finest and it's fairly cheap.

QSC is a composite military/civilian club that has access to the Quantico ranges (pistol, rifle to 1000 yards
and trap/skeet) by providing our own RSOs. The club emails each week's schedule in advance as RSOs commit. The ranges are located west of I95 and are immaculate, despite being used by both the Quantico Marines and the FBI Academy nearby.
In order to maintain status of a "Military Club", QSC has to limit the number of affiliated members from the non-DoD community. Currently, I think it's two-for-one military to civilian. My impression is that the waiting list moves fairly fast as new military members join up.
Fringe benefit is the nearby marine Corps MTU-Marksmanship Training Unit (think "sniper") and the attendant availability of their considerable expertise in shooting and armorer skills. More info at the QSC website E3M provided.
I would expect about 30-40 minutes' drive time from Herndon to QSC.

I'll let you know if and when I ever make it to the top of the wait list. It's currently running at about 9-10 months wait to get in.
I was a member (and a RSO) at Quantico for several years. I dropped out because the pistol ranges were hardly ever open. My brief comments reflect only what I observed some years ago:
a) If you are affiliated with the military, as many are in NoVa, (active, reserve, retired, dependant, and perhaps civil service) there is no wait to join.
b) If you are not, there is a waiting list.
c) Facilities are excellent, especially for sporting clays and rifles.
d) Club operates well, is friendly, and inexpensive.

Another thing regarding membership at the Quantico Shooting Club, when I was a member years ago, every firearm you intend to use at any of the Quantico ranges must first receive a Limited Technical Inspection (LTI) at the Marine armory before you can fire it on the ranges. You are issued a LTI card for each firearm and if I recall correctly, the firearm must be inspected every year.

On 21/ 22 Aug, theie was a .50 cal match on Range 4, and on 21-23 Aug a Carbine Class on Range 1.
There are great ranges at Quantico. They will not tolerate the nonsense and safety violations that occur on many civilian ranges.
