Just asking for opinions on probability and such.
I am thinking about picking up one of those Mauser 71-84 rifles and converting it to a detachable mag .45-70 rifle by changing out the barrel, replacing the bolt, making my own mag well and seeing if I can't find a magazine that'll hold 10 rounds of .45-70.
I am looking at .45-70 since it's pressure rating is well below the .43 Mauser's max rating and the bullets appear to be close enough in size to easily work with in both rim and shell diameter.

BTW.
Anyone have any idea why SOG's site has a bandwidth error? It's been going on for days and I am worried they may be victims of a DOS attack.

Don't have a clue about the practicality of doing the conversion, but:

A 10 round 45-70 magazine would have to be curved like an AK-47 and then some for 10 45-70 rounds to stack & feed right, I betcha.

One 45-70 case is .480" at the mouth and .608" at the rim.
SO, .128" per case x 10 = over 1 1/4" difference in stack height front to rear.

Sounds like a good way to keep yourself out of trouble for a couple of years.

There are a few places I've seen that convert Lee-Enfields to .45-70, you may want to look into how they do it. They're already set up for rimmed rounds, so that might be the place for your magazine.

Edit: Scratch that, the article says
"The magazine is new-made, with the same external contours as the military one, and spacers and guides for the fat, straight .45-70 cases. While it will hold four rounds, Gibbs warns not to load more than three to ensure reliable feeding. I found this advice to be on the mark: putting one round in the chamber and three more in the magazine was a sure route to a jam. Another thing I discovered is that it’s almost impossible to insert cartridges into it correctly while it’s in the rifle. I take it out, fill it up, and re-insert it."

IMHO, converting a 71/84 to a .45-70 box magazine would be a nightmare. I would say it is impossible, but with enough time and money (lots of it) anything is possible.

Of course the result would be a one-off of probably less value than the 71/84 as is, but a project is a project.

Did you say "A DOS attack" ?

You must be an octegenarian, congratulations

DOS = Denial Of Service.

A DOS attack is when a hacker sends out a message telling a bunch of computers to access a websites server, causing the server to overload with requests and deny additional requests. basically, it causes the server to be overwhelmed with requests by unknowing computers, denying all requests to people who are actually trying to access the website.

i've see them converted to other calibers but they were always done as a single shot stalking rifle not a mag fed repeater.
a dragunov mag should be close enough to make work, the rim on a 45-70 is slightly larger than a 7.62x54r but it should be close enough to work, if its to tight you could cut the mag open then have a sheetmatal shop run a beadroller down both halves to give it enough clearance then tig or mig it back together.
