Some range brass questons--308

I found some 308 brass at one of my favorite brass mining pits that has some odd marks on it. I have found it before and it reloads fine but I am curious what firearm is used to fire it. It has about 10 clean wide areas and 10 narrow sooty lines from case mouth back to almost the base of the bullet. When it was fired the brass is stretched into the sooty areas and you can still feel it after the brass is cleaned. It irons out the next firing OK, but I was wondering what it was fired in as I have never been there when the brass was being emptied. Anyone help me and ID the rifle? I hope to meet the owner sometime and thank them as I still have almost 700 once fired brass that has been left behind in the last year yet to reload.

Thanks 243winxb! I knew it was something like that but in all the time I have been involved in this I have never run into one of those rifles.--- At least when they have been being used to be able to observe the brass that was ejected anyways. Upon reloading they do iron out and seem to have no lasting ill effects but I always like to know what is going on.

The photo is a 10mm if i remember correctly. I am 66 and still learning myself.

Here is brass from a HK91. Doesn't sound like it's a match to what you are describing though.

Sounds like a H&K. They have a fluted chamber. You need to check the cases and make sure they are not Berdan primed, they will ruin your day if they are. I stopped picking up range brass at my local range, to many berdan primed cases and those that were not were prone to case seperation very quickly.. YMMV

That's exactly what the round looked like with soot going further down the body. Should have posted a picture myself but in a hurry to clean them. The last pile I picked up yesterday was 250 plus brass and I cleaned them last night and sized them today. Not a berdan primer in the bunch, this batch was all CBC brass. Someone is spending some money filling their targets full of holes. They have not used any berdan primed brass in 3 years.

The only issue with HK fluted chamber brass is with guns with the wrong size rollers and thus wrong headspace. The looser the gun/softer the brass, the deeper the flute marks. I've had some that looked almost like gears. Some others had an ejector problem and will crush the case mouth, ding in the shoulder, and also put a healthy crease about the middle of the body- PLUS the deep indentations...almost like the rifle REFUSES to allow anyone to reload their brass. Very German thing to do, ja? Those get scrapped.

Yours look fine to me. A good tumbling in aggressive walnut will clean them up, and they usually fireform OK for me. I've seen it on 9mm brass too, the HK subguns and P7 pistol do this too.
