Well it looks like the plans for the AR build have fallen through the cracks :fire: so I'm going to have to consider something cheeped for now. This is not an "I cant afford an AR" cuz I'm still going to get it, just a few months later, I'm just giving the alternatives another look at.

What would be a good SKS or AK variant? Which do you prefer?

    Should I go 7.63 or 5.45?

If you are looking for something to fill the time, between now, and when you get an AR, I would say get the SKS. Yugo SKS's in excellent condition can be had for $100. The AK is 2-3 times more $ at the very least depending on what you get. Save the extra $200-$300, for the AR build. 5.45 is available in the AK only. To my knowledge no SKS was available in 5.45. I think 5.45 is a better round than 7.62. I'm not sure, but I think 5.45 is harder to find right now than 7.62. Also I think mags are more expensive for 5.45.

An SKS with a Tech Sights rear arperture will be a pretty good shooter and give you a similar sight picture as your AR to be. I like the Russian, Romanian or Norinco SKS better than the Yugo 59/66. It's lighter, has a chrome lined bore and has better balance.

On the other hand, you could pick up a Kel-Tec SU-16 for now and share ammo and mags with your future AR. With the folding stock it has the benifit of being more compact than the AR.

If you want something to kill time until you build/buy an AR, get the SKS or a Marlin 60SS.
