I typically see something I like & but it … needless to say, this has bitten me in the ass more than once!

When the FN Five-Seven came out I had a PS90 and was interested but didn’t get in on it soon enough, and they skyrocketed in price.

Now Ruger has came out with one, typically around $700 … but is it worth it?

What say you THR Brain Trust?

Academy had one in central Texas yesterday. $749 IIRC.

Paul Harrell did a side be side review against the FN.

I like mine. Has a Vortex on it and I’m good out to 125 yards for coyotes and vermin. Carries well due to lightweight, and I’m loving the light recoil. And it has 20rd magazines!

I think it’s one of Ruger’s best pistols right now.

I have a PS90 too, and thought about getting a Ruger before the sky fell on ammo. Now I'm thinking about selling the PS90 and the ammo I have.

I was under the impression the 5.7x28mm was on life support and fading fast. It didn't beat out the 9mm in NATO trials so, is it toast now?

I wouldn't say it's toast but it's a niche cartridge at least in this country. It has some advantages and disadvantages relative to 9mm. I think in most applications 9mm is a better overall round for a variety of reasons. That doesn't mean the 5.7 is bad, though.

Thanks for everyone's comments, I think I can see a Ruger57 in my future.

Thanks for including the link to the side be side review, very helpful. I've also found some reviewers, for whatever reason have bias, this guy seemed pretty straight forward. I was suprised that he thought the trigger was horrible, abysmal ect. and it was also interesting that the FN had a considerable break-in period and after several years still isn't completely reliable while the Ruger has no break-in period and in the several hundreds of rounds he's run through it, zero malfunctions.

As to ammo, I'm not very concerned as I've still got ~ 2K from my PS90, and I also have a AR57 with a full-auto bolt that my M16 seems to like, but I still don't seem to shoot it all that much. At any rate I've saved all my brass and bought reloading dies and a shell plate for my Dillon 550B years ago ... although I haven't reloaded anything yet, I think I'm covered.

One thing I didn't hear is if the barrel on the Ruger57 is threaded ... Several years ago I bought a YHM 22 suppressor which is full auto rated and makes my AR57 hearing safe.

My AR57 started life with a 16" barrel but I had it cut back to 8" and re-threaded so my suppressor only extends from the one piece upper about 1.5" or if I want, I can just use a 5.5" barrel extension and I don't have to shoot it suppressed. These eject out the bottom just like the PS90 and I've cut the top off an old magazine to use as a brass catcher.

Internet tradition is to suggest that Keltec is offering the P50 in 5.7 using the P90 magazine, and that you should get both! :)

I love Internet traditions ... however I've found I typically can't hold my breath that long.
If Keltec is going to offer a P50 they would be wise to chamber it in 22mag, just like their pistol ... of course then they would probably run in to mag loading problems from the rim on the 22mag.
