After a bout of trading,swapping and wheeler-dealering I've wound up with a pair of new additions to the safe.The something old is a new Kimber Custom LW 1911.The something new is a Wilson Combat Sig P320.
They are both good looking and functioning(so far)pistols.I wanted something a little lighter to carry than my steel frame 1911R1 Remington and when I picked up the Kimber on a whim,I liked the way it felt,and the weight difference really felt like what I was looking for.I like the 5 inch 1911 better than the shorter variants and having an alloy frame with the 5 inch barrel made sense.
I've read a lot of negative things about Kimber 1911's and that was in the back of my mind when I told the LGS I would take it.Like I always do,I took it home and stripped it down to clean and lubricate and put on the magnifier to see what it looked like under the surface and I was more than happy to see smooth surfaces without tool marks or anything else that shouldn't have been there.While I was looking it over,I did see one grip screw that wasn't holding the lower part of the grip tight to the frame.It didn't feel right,so I ran a tap through the bushing and cleaned the threads just to be sure and all was well.
A trip to the range in the back yard(WV is such a wonderfully gun friendly state,hell,they even dropped the sales tax on guns and ammo)was very pleasing indeed.The pistol ran like it should,and it seems to like to make small groups with my 185 grain XTP handloads.Felt recoil is a little more than a steel frame gun,but still very comfortable.All in all,I have to say the internet experts who had many bad things to say about Kimber should be taken with a grain of salt.
Now something new.I've been doing a lot of reading about the Wilson Combat modified Sig P320 and I had pretty much talked myself into keeping an eye out for one for the past few months.It just happened when I was in the shop looking at my Kimber purchase there was a WC P320 in the other end of the display case that appeared to be very lightly used and in perfect condition.Bad thing was,I didn't really have the money to plunk down on it right then and I told the store manager that if it was still there when the buyer picked up a rifle I was selling I would come back and get it.She said"well,it won't be there,it'll be in the safe in the back room with your name in it whenever you want to pick it up".A week later I was on my way home with it,and I have to say that it's quite a nice pistol.It's my third P320,and by far the best feeling one in my hands.I also have a 45 Compact and an M17,both of which are great pistols as far as I'm concerned.
The Wilson grip frame is a little different than the Sig frame and the trigger is a little smoother as well.It's a very soft recoiling pistol and it has an annoying habit of shooting exactly where it's pointed,and sometimes I don't do a good job of pointing any of my pistols.
I just thought it was neat to buy a time honored classic like the 1911 and a fairly modern design like the Sig/Wilson.They are both welcomed in my safe and I'm grateful to be able to enjoy both of them.
