Currently have a Vortex DB 4-12x scope mounted on my Ranch target rifle. It's as far back in the rings as possible and entirely uncomfortable to shoot. I'd read after the fact that budget Vortex scopes aren't very generous with their eye relief. So, is there anything at a similar price point that would be a better option?

After 2 years of being on the back burner, I decided it's time to figure out if I'm going to end up keeping this rifle or not. Don't wanna spend $500+ on a scope for a rifle that I may well never be happy with.

Generally speaking, Leupold has the most generous eye relief. As long as you stay with a 3-9X or lower power many have close to 5" on the low end and just under 4" on 9X. The greater the magnification the less eye relief you have.

The VX-Freedom line is around $300. You don't want a sub-$200 scope.

Some scopes have a constant eye relief of around 4". And to me 4" is plenty

I may very well try out one of the Banner 2's, at least long enough to figure out the rifle.

You're right about that, but I'm upside down in this thing already by the time I blew $150 on rings I couldn't use and another $175 for the scope that's on it. Fortunately I have another rifle on the way that I can (hopefully) use the Vortex scope on. If the Ruger shoots even halfway decent, I'll put a good scope on it later.

For some reason, the scope won't clear with medium rings even though it's listed as 40mm. Had to put high ones on it, and can't find a high offset Ruger ring in any color.

Which was after one set of medium the chart showed to work, one set of high that were mediums mislabeled, the set that came with it that were 2 different heights (Redhawk, M77) and a mislabeled extra high ring that wasn't the same as anything I already had. Even tried a clamp on Weaver type mount. Lol

If you can find a burris timberline, it will give you the eye relief your looking for.
I think even with a rail youll likely be butting into the rear ring

Someone makes a Picatinny rail that mounts to the integral ring mounts on the ranch rifles...

Here is one

Yeah, that's what it was I'd bought. I'd said Weaver but it's the Picatinny type. It's a hollow base for using the open sights, which mine doesn't have. I could possibly try it with some offset rings. Didn't really consider that at the time.

Wouldn’t that be well for a scout rifle scope? They have long eye relief.

There’s just as much problem if a person uses a scout scope with 7-9” or 12” of eye relief when their eye is at 4” as there is when they have a conventional scope with only 3” of eye relief…

I ended up picking up one of these... Cabelas-Intrepid-HD-Scope-by-Vortex.jpg
Cabela's multi-turret 3-12x40. It's the "caliber specific" for .243, which now sits atop my .223.

It sits farther back so it feels better, and should help somewhat with my neck discomfort. Reg price $200, display model closeout price $80. Worth a try anyway.

Any reason I can't just sight it in at 100 yards and ignore all the extra stuff? Still plan on a keeper scope later if it turns out to be a keeper rifle.
