Had a guy come in and start looking at our handgun selection. I had already said hello so I went over and started being Mr Friendlybutnotpushy salesman. We chatted Smith vs Colt, semi vs revolver. We even discussed Army (me) basic training vs Marine (him) boot camp.

A good 10 or 15 minutes went by, but not being busy I didn't want to just brush him off. Suddenly he stops, peers closer at a gun in the case and asks to see it. I got it out for him, he looked it over really good and said he'd take it.

As we're doing the paperwork he looked at me with a bit of a twinkle in his eye and said "When I saw that gun I knew I had to have it, I don't have one with that serial number in my collection!"

Intelligence and sense of humor, need more people like that.

Sometimes a knowing buyer may be testing the salespeople as well. It sounds like he knew what he wanted, maybe he was initially just seeing if you're going to push him towards buying something he doesn't.

Attentive and knowledgeable and personable salespeople often get my business even if I really was "only looking" when I blundered in. Sounds like you were all three for him as well.

Nice job!

Stay safe.

I worked with an old retired cop at a shop/range. One night we were stocking the cases, he put a snubby 686 aside, I always knew what that meant with him.
I asked him "dont you already have one?"
He said he did, but the last digits of that serial # was the same as his old (deceased) partners badge #.
