9:21am: Gunnies who read?
I ran across this, courtesy of Wyman Cook:

http://www.nakedauthors.com/2007/12/i-did-something-different-this-week.html

The part that jumped out at me was:

But if I draw in some rednecks or hunters to the world of reading, it'll all be worth it.

Now, James O. Born seems like a decent guy, and he shoots acceptably, though with some keyholing. It's quite possible (since he writes crime fic that would attract that kind of reader) he meant it as sarcasm.

My concern is the number of people who will find the stereotype perpetuated by his comments.

So, for 24 hours, starting now, I want as many "rednecks and hunters" to log in, briefly describe your redneckery or the last helpless and delicious animal you killed, and the last book you read. Tell your friends. Let's fill this up. As I know 90% of my readers are "rednecks and hunters," I expect them to sound off. (IN MY BLOG, not his)

I was just looking in the mirror and I notice my neck IS red (got some sun last week), so I'll chime in on this one.

Redneckery: I smoke a corncob pipe, enjoy fishing, hiking, and shooting and own several vehicles that do not function. I make my own beer, load my own ammo, and fix my own cars (which may be why so many of them don't work:rolleyes:).

Readin'ery: The last book I read was Ayoob's Combat Handgunnery, the last magazine was Maximum PC (that's PC as in personal computer, not political correctness). I do a lot of reading on the 'net, does that count too?

I moved from the cities to the country. I love it. I never really was much of a "redneck" before, but I am trying to catch up.

The last really redneck thing I did was spearfish for suckers by using pitchforks. There were three of us, and two spears. One would watch for the fish and direct the other two in to trap them and throw spears. There was also a car involved...

I am currently reading Tom Clancey's "Executive Orders." It is a good read.

well I've lived out in the country almost my whole life, killed a few deer and other little critters. Last book i read was Tom Clancey's Bear and Dragon, other recent ones were other Clancey books and Stephen King books, next one is Powell's autobiagraphy.
