Southpaw AR guys, do you use an ambi safety?

I got one for mine in the middle of September, when I got my lower:D Havent used it once that I can recall. I shoulda spent that $20(?) on another magazine or more ammo.

I got in the habit of hitting the safety with the knuckle of my left hand, I guess from handling ARs that belonged to other people, none of which had the safety on the correct side for someone who fired from the incorrect shoulder. I hadnt noticed I didnt use the right side safety until an on-looker at the range reccomended an ambi safety from DPMS. When I said I had one, his facial expression was as priceless as mine, when I realized I didnt use it and could get along fine with the one installed from the factory.

So how many southpaws here dont bother with an ambi safety on their ARs?
 
I have an ambi safety on my AR but not on my M16.

I doesn't really matter to me. I use the ambi when I have it, but I just use my left thumb over the other side when I don't have an ambi.

As long as you can move it easily ans consistently, do whatever works for you.
 
I installed a DPMS ambi safety on my Colt AR-15A3. I find it easier to manipulate than a RH-only safety.

I need to work out the dimensions to make an ambi safety for my AR-180B. AR-15 safeties won't work on the AR-180B because the receiver is slightly wider, otherwise I would've ordered a DPMS safety for it, too.
 
Nope.

I simply got used to using my knuckle. It works fine, (unlike a 1911, which needs an ambisafety), and I figure It'll never be an issue if I ever need to borrow an AR.

I can see how that would not be a problem for a pistol grip carbine. But I hate the bolt safety on my 870, though I don't want to flip it because everyone else in the house that might need to use it in an emergency is a righty. Time to trade down for a Mossberg I guess.

Also does any southpaw here have experience with using an M1 Carbine? I have been looking at the Auto-Ordnance M1, but in the past I have been leery of the safety setup on the M1's I have looked at.
 
The M1 carbines came with one of two types of safety. The bush button cross bolt type, or the lever. Mine has a button, which I hit with my left thumb. I think the buttons are easier for Leftys than the lever type.
The lever is on the right side, at the front of the trigger guard. it's not as easy to flip with the left thumb.
 
i never use the safety on any of my rifles. don't care for them at all. if i want the gun to be "safe" i remove the magazine and put a chamber flag in it.
 
Ambi Safety

I have installed Ambi safety on both my Colt AR15 and Bushmaster M16. THe DPMS is a much better safety or selector switch then the Bushmaster. I can and have done with out it but perfer having it as my grip remains consistant.
 
I don't have ambi-safeties on my ARs primarily because I want mine to be as "standard" as possible. That way if I pick one up that isn't mine, it is still familiar to me. I hardly ever use the safeties anyway.
 
I don't use one because there are other things (ammo, ammo and oh yeah, ammo) that take priority for my money. I use my index finger, but find that the lever, when in the fire position (down) can rub my index finger a bit raw with recoil. I've been meaning to try and take the dremmel to it and flatten it down a bit, but haven't had the extra time.
 
I've just got to where I deal with the safety lever. I was used to it before I ever got an AR.

Thats the main reason I havent got a Norgon ambi mag release.
