Speculation on future C&R handguns

Does anyone have any insights into what C&R handguns can be expected over the next few years? Will there be other more modern guns such as the CZ-82?

Has to be 50 years old to get C&R status.

And, it's not some process or anything, a gun is a C&R automatically once it's 50 years old.

From the ATF:

Firearms automatically attain curio or relic (C&R) status when they are 50 years old. Any firearm that is at least 50 years old, and in its original configuration, would qualify as a C&R firearm. It is not necessary for such firearms to be listed in ATF’s C&R list. However, if your C&R item is regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA) and you desire removal from the provisions of the NFA, you must submit the firearm to the Firearms Technology Branch for evaluation and a formal classification.

No idea if they take submissions for adding to the list of if they just do it on their own.

Not so. It has to be at least 50 years or deemed C&R eligible by the ATF, unless the CZ-82 is 50 years old.

True that the 50 year rule isn't the only way, but it's more rare to see one less than 50 years old make the list. Usually it's because something similar is already there like the SKS variants that have been added to the list or some kind of limited edition commemorative thing.

The exact methods are:

As set out in the regulations (27 CFR 478.11), curios or relics include firearms which are of special interest to collectors by reason of some quality other than is associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons. To be recognized as curios or relics, firearms must fall within one of the following categories:
1.) Firearms which were manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date, but not including replicas thereof;
2.) Firearms which are certified by the curator of a municipal, State, or Federal museum which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest; and
3.) Any other firearms which derive a substantial part of their monetary value from the fact that they are novel, rare, bizarre, or because of their association with some historical figure, period, or event. Proof of qualification of a particular firearm under this category may be established by evidence of present value and evidence that like firearms are not available except as collector’s items, or that the value of like firearms available in ordinary commercial channels is substantially less.

I don't see how the CZ 82 meets any of the qualifications/specifications that BATFE has established, yet it is a C&R pistol. I'd love to know how that happened. Somebody had to propose it to BATFE...I wonder who did it.

CZ82 was granted C&R status cause some museum (forgot which one) petitioned the BATFE to add it to the list.
BATFE read the petition and granted the CZ82 C&R status.
