Spegel Grips

Howdy Ya'll.

I have been searching for a good grip for a Model-640 S&W of recent manufacture. So far I have tried a fair number including S&W current issue rubber grips, both Hogue grips, Pachmayr Compaqs, Barami hip grip + Tyler Grip Adapter + Handall Jr., Uncle Mikes, S&W Magna + Tyler, and even some old Fitz Gunfighter grips.

So far, the best (for me) has been the S&W Magna (checkered) with a Tyler Grip Adapter, but I keep thinking(wondering) about the Spegel Boot Grips. I'd really like to try them, but at just under $200.00 last I checked, it's a healthy investment.

I am hoping to find someone who has owned them or used them extensively and can give me their impressions and perhaps even some comparisons.

S&W's current J-Frame rubber grips made by Unkle Mikes are for all practical purposes, Spegel boot grips made from rubber.

They are very cheap so you can try them before buying the real thing.

I have a set on my old Model 36 Chiefs Special, and like them a lot for carry, not so much for shooting full-bore loads all day!

I second the recommendation of the Uncle Mike's boot grips from S&W...as far as I know that is the only place to get them any longer.

My understanding is that the UM boot grips are a licensed copy of the Spegel bootgrips...just in rubber...my only regret is that they didn't copy the model specific to the 640 series. My 642 has been wearing a set for years

Check out the Secret Service grips from Eagle. I have a checkered walnut pair for my 442. Look like Speigel to me.

Not sure where you're getting your pricing information from, but if you'll go to Mr. Spegel's website (www.craigspegel.com), you'll find that his prices are significantly less than that, from $60 to $80 for most of his grips. I have a set on an N-frame, and I've just ordered another set for another N-frame. Give him a call (he doesn't have an online store) and tell him what you want. His delivery times can be kinda long, around 4 months, but in my opinion, his grips are worth the wait.

Tequila, the prices were from Lightning Arms as well as the link on Spegel's web site which is for Novak.

I will give him a call though, hadn't thought of that. Duh!

His "high-horn" Centennial model is the way to go. It allows a much higher grip.

k-80 is right. The particularly great thing about Craig Spegel's grips for the Centennial is that they are are specifically FOR the Centennial. Unlike the Uncle Mikes or any other j-frame grip I've ever seen, they come all the way up to the top of the 'hump' and allow a natural, fast high hold on the j-frame. I bought mine about 4 years ago, and have carried my 340pd that bears them hundreds (no, it'd be thousands now) of hours in pocket and on belt since then. They still look good, feel good, and shoot good. They are not cheap, obviously, but it was without a doubt some of the best gun-stuff money I've ever spent.
