That's it, in a nutshell. I want to add a beavertail & commander hammer and an ambi thumb safety (southpaw, here) to the GI. Where I hoped this could be an inexpensive addition ($100-150), the cost appears to be ~$300, based on 2 local quotes and a call to Springfield. (Also, I believe this requires more installation skill than I have, so it's worth it to me to pay someone to make sure the weapon is fitted correctly & safely). I was at the $400 price mark when I bought the gun (LNIB); new from Buds is in the low $500s.

My $400 gun would suddenly have almost $800 sunk in it.

I know...if a fellow wanted, he can sink his money wherever & however he wants. I like the GI, particularly the shorter trigger, but is upgrading it a wise move? Or, would I be better served by shopping for a used, loaded model with these desired features?

Unless I had some sentimental reason for keeping the gun I would just sell or trade. Some people like to tinker with their guns and enjoy doing things like this themselves. If you are going to have to pay someone to do the work I think you will be better off selling or trading.

For around 800 I would look for a springfield loaded. I have the milspec and will one day own a loaded model too. It offers a lot for the price.
