So I'm looking at a Springfield 1903 that has been rebarreled in .243 as a varmint rifle. The one thing I've noticed with it is that since it's basically a mauser copy that the safety can't be engaged with a scope mounted. Are there any safety conversions that you'd recommend? I've found one so far at Brownells that replaces the trigger group but I think I'd rather have a Winchester 70 type safety. Are there any companies that make something like that for a Springfield?

When I sporterized my Israeli 98K in 308 back in the 80's, I bought a 2 position safety replacement that, instead of swinging 180 dwegrees over the top, moves 90 degrees from all the way to the right to about a 2 o'clock position. Got it at Brownells I believe.

Works great and clears the scope.

Here's one that works on the Springfield.

Check Midway or others for a "Buehler" style safety. There's a Buehler safety on my sporterized 03, works fine, and doesn't touch the scope.

I looked at Midway and didn't see one for the 03, only for Mausers, so don't know if they are still made.

Regards.
