I have one that I got a few months ago. Plain parkerized.
Fit and finish: The Parkerizing is NICE. No flaws anywhere that I can see. Slide to frame is a little loose. 2 peice barrel.
Reliability: About 600 rounds with NO hiccups AT ALL. Can be trusted to go BANG every time. No shizzy.
Accuracy: Leaves a bit to be desired. Not a tack driver. Two peice barrel and somewhat loose tolerances on the bushing. Might need some work there.
I'd probably get one, then think about getting a nicer barrel and match bushing. A buddy here at work knows the Clarks (Clark Custom Pistols), so he's going to get me a deal on a replacement barrel and accuracy job. Clark will guarantee 2.5" at 50 YARDS! No shizzle.
To me, it would be a great base gun for some improvement, but it is RELIABLE as it is.

I had one a few months ago that I was pleased with...sure it had a couple of things that could have been improved on, but for the price I paid, it was fine. It was totally reliable & depenndable 
Oh, by the way, I don't have it anymore because it fell victim to a trade I worked out w/ a buddy. He seems quite pleased w/ himself now that he has it.

I got one a couple of months ago (like you, I wanted a plain 1911 to see how I liked them)
I like it. It is well fit and finished, and reasonably accurate.
Mine has been reliable through 300 rounds except for some mag-related problems with some aftermarket mags I bought.
No problems at all with the 7-rd factory magazine.

i'm looking into the same deal. only thing i've seen that comes close to price and quality is rock island armory .45's. after being at the last show here in TPA, i got to hold both, and even w/ the $60-$100 price diff, i ( and many others) would choose the SA mil-spec.
the rock island is nice, but the name says it all for SA. quality was higher on the SA as well.
only thing standing in my way (of getting SA mil-spec) now, is me.... i am cheap

This one isn't called Mil-spec for nothing. That's what it is and the SA Mil-spec is a great gun for customization. You can always buy the gun with mods but this is a great way to learn the 1911 and build a custom gun to really be proud of.
Great starter gun, highly reccomended.

yes, a two peice barrel. There are literally two peices to the barrel.
On MY SA Milspec, with the slide closed, if you look at the top of the barrel, you can see a seam close to the muzzle end of the chamber. That's where the two peices meet.
They work, but they're not known for accuracy.
