I have a relatively new Springfield Champion 45 acp.
It is the Commander sized 1911 with 5" RAMPED bull barrel.
I went to a gun range and was required to use THEIR ammo, my mistake, so I used it and somehow it damaged the barrel's feed ramp; looking at the ramp from the rear of the pistol, the nick in the steel is on the left side of the ramp. I won't go into what may have caused this, the store ammo was nickel plated steel cased 45 acp, so I'm assuming the steel case caused the nick but my gunsmith boiled it down to poor manufacture.
Whatever.
The nick does not impede proper feed of ammo at all.

Here's my question...
I want to replace this barrel as a gift to myself later this year for Christmas. Can I use a no-ramp barrel for this pistol?
Will it feed/function properly with a no-ramp barrel?
Or do I HAVE to buy a ramped barrel?

No, if the frame is cut for a ramped barrel - then you must stay with a ramped barrel.

However - to my knowledge, only the aluminum champions use a ramped barrel. Yet, you say you have a 5" barrel - the champion's use a 4" barrel. Did you mis speak, or do you have a modded gun?

It was a typo, 4" barrel, aluminum alloy frame, stock pistol from Springfield. Thanks for the info, now all I need to do is figure out what barrel I prefer, usually determined by how fat my wallet is.

Nickle plated steel case ammo would be a new one on me.
I don't know of anyone making that anywhere.

I'm pretty sure it was nickle plated brass case ammo.

But regardless of that, it seems very unlikely the ammo damaged a steel feed ramp.

It does sound like a manufacturing defect to me.
I'd get Springfield on the horn and see what they want to do to fix it.

Are you using mags with the Devel follower (such as Chip McCormick mags)? They have a tendency to tip forward and gouge aluminum feed ramps. However, as mentioned, it's unlikely to have damaged a steel ramped barrel.

It is possible, to have put a nick on the frame below the ramped barrel, and in that case it is mostly cosmetic.

Not to worry

...

I agree -

Feel free to use the SA's lifetime warranty, no questions asked, give them a call and they'll send you a shipping label and fix it or simply replace it, fr that, I have no doubts. SA's CS and warranty is top-billing..

Get something nice for yourself, still, at Christmas..
