Springfield P9

Does anyone know anything about this pistol? I was at a gun store last night and they had one and I don't remember hearing about it. Is it something new or something that is no longer in production? The price tag was very appealling, but couldn't buy it at this time. It looked very similar to a CZ-75; similar controls, etc. The tag on the pistol said Springfield, but I don't recall where the company stamp is located.

CZ copy, from back in the day. That's all I know off the top of my head, a shop had one too a while back.

IIRC, the Springfield P9 was made in Italy by Tanfoglio (same as the EAA Witnesses) and imported by Springfield back when CZ's were unavailable. Hope that helps.

They had several variations. Standard, compact, "carry comps", all the way up to IPSC Open Class multi-port compensated models.
I think SA did the finishing. They usually are well-finished.

As a former compact owner, I feel the P9's are the nicest of the CZ types. The blued ones are very nice, with good fitting and finish.

I have 2 of them. A 40 long slide ported (the P9Ultra) and a P9 9mm conventional. They are very nicely made. Excellent polish and fitting and generally pretty accurate.

My only real regret is they are not still made by springifeld. They were and are a very nice gun that would have been more popular today.

The parts were indeed made in Italy by Fratelli Tanfoglio, the same company that makes the parts for IMI, EAA, Tanarmi and some other CZ-75 clone lines. Springfield did the final machining, fitting and finishing and they were very nice pistols.

I own a Longslide Ported in .40 and a compact in .40. Fabulous CZ clones. Very nicely made.

Note: I have been told P9s will not use CZ magazines without modifying the catch-hole on the mag. I do know from experience that they WILL use EAA mags.

Thanks for the info. I may have to go and see about putting it on layaway; price tag was under $300. Maybe worth the further consideration.

Here are my cz clones. The P9's are the two on the right. The upper one is the long slide ported 40 with the briley target barrel and the lower on is the p9 convenional 9mm. For comparison, lower left is a 97b, and upper left is a witness.

Just look at the finish difference between them. The witness is pretty bad and the P9 long slide port (the P9Ultra in Springfield terms) has over 6000 rnds down it and you can just start to see some slide wear marks. You can also see the slight color change of the ultra slide to the frame. That is due to the exceptionally hard steel used in that gun. Very tough stuff indeed! In this picture the 97b looks like it has the highest polish. Just barely. The light does not catch the P9ultra right to see it is nearly as well done.

By the way, the witness has about 4000 rnds of 10mm, the 97b has about 2000 rnds and the newest one, the p9 9mm has less then 500 or so.

If you study the pictures you will see little differences in the trigger loops, slide widths and serrations beyond the obvious differences like grips et al.

All are good guns, but the P9's are really nice.

Excellent choice - yes, Tan mags will work in the P9. Also, the P9 is the only Tan with the firing pin block removed....

Thats how I ended up with the p9 9mm. It was NIB, in a gun store all alone and I felt sorry for it. Great guns, far better quality then the witness or other CZ clones I have seen. Mine P9's are actually nicer made then the CZ 97b, but all it all it is hard to compare because they are so differnt designs.
