Springfield (Savage) 67 pump, what's the deal?

I picked this up for $89 in a pawnshop, mechanically solid overall, a little freckly in a few spots but no major wear.

It appears to be a single-bar pump shotgun, tang safety, etc. Marked "Springfield Model 67 Series D -- Savage Arms".

I tried searching THR to no avail, any info on this model? Disassembly info would be great too, both to clean it, and to remove the mag plug I believe it has. There's something that I can hear sliding inside the magazine, but the follower has good tension. I assume there's some dowel or something in there.

Would I have been far smarter to pay $10 more to get the Mossberg 500AT at the same pawnshop?

from what I can remember the trigger group is problematic. If you don't need to drop the trigger group I would not. Just swab the bore, lightly oil and call it good enough.

The only disassembly help I can offer is numerick arms catalog has a parts diagram.

Probably should have spent the extra $10 for the Mossberg. They are much simpler than the Savage/Springfield. The Mossberg is much easier to disassemble.
On the S/S the FIRST thing(remember this!!) you do to disassemble the reciever group(after making sure it is unloaded, of course ) is loosen one butt plate screw, take out the other screw, swivel plate out of the way, unscrew the stock bolt and then remove the stock.

Make sure the hammer is cocked.Then take out the trigger group screw and pin and the trigger group should come right out.

REMEMBER !!!!!! Stock off FIRST! it locks against the trigger ass'y AND reciever.

Also, check to see if yours is an early model without the dissconector. Earlies could be slam fired by holding the trigger back and pumping the action. That can be a BIG surprise if you're not expecting it.

Probably so.

That stuff about having to take the whole hind end off the gun to field strip the receiver is pretty much what I remember too, it's best left intact for the most part.

I had a 67 in 20 Ga for a long time. The trigger housing is made of pot metal & can break. It was prone to jamming & was a hard pumper. I do not like them. Gunsmith told me once they keep coming back to his shop for repairs.

Find out how to clean it and give it a good cleaning. For only $89.00
if it works Ok you got a good deal. You can get most any replacment part
from Numrich. And yes the Mossberg would have been the better choice.
There would be a dowell/plug to use for hunting to limit the magazine to 2 rounds and 1 in the chamber. The dowel can be removed if you arent going hunting.

Fortunately, the fine folks at CashAmerica have a (7) day return policy, so I'll be moseying down this week to put this one back up. It does say that I can trade for cash or "item of equal value". I could brass it out and ask for the Mossberg 500 in exchange, arguing that this way they only lose $10 instead of losing an entire sale. Comments?

Not that I particularly need a Mossberg, but just on general principle...

Well you will be better off with the Mossberg so if you can return the Savage ,even paying the $10 difference , you will be better served .
