spyderco or benchmade

I would not recommend a Spyderco knife to anyone who knows how to sharpen their own knife.

Im puzzed by this? Are you talking about the VG-10 and S30V steels?
Ya, the are are a more difficult to sharpen because they are hard and have a high Vanadiun content. But anyone with good basic freehand skills just has to spend a little more time and care.

i love my spyderco's. i have also gone cheap and gotten a couple of byrds. i lose my knife a lot and that's why i went to byrd. i can easily open and close both knives with one hand. i also like how thin they are. they almost disappear in my pocket (like i said sometimes they actually do disappear). i go with the plain blades because i can't sharpen a serrated.

For some reason the Spyderco Meerkat keeps turning up in my pocket. It's small, non-threatening and the gimmick factor is well over the top.

It's oddly addictive especially given the low price point. And the blade is only 2".

dude, get a Dark Ops...

just kidding.

i'v owned only 3 Benchmades, and i gave two of them away to friends. there's no doubt they're great knives, but they just weren't for me. i was never a fan of Spydies, until i carried and used one. now i'm hooked.

knives are a personal preference deal. it's hard to convince someone why they should try a certain brand, other than providing basic facts about blade design, steel, and price. everything else is pretty subjective, i think. i know guys who swear by Cold Steel, and others who won't carry anything other than a Microtech (i wish i had one, though).

just go to a shop that has different knives, and pick them up, and tell us what you decide on.

I've never owned a Benchmade, but I have a spyderco that I've been using/abusing for 12+ years, still extremely sharp, and still functions as new.

It started out life as a Endura, but stupid me in my youth broke the tip off trying to pry something WAY to big, so I ground the blade to where it looks just like a rescue now.

So I don't see a reason to pay more for anything else if what I have does the job very well, unless it's just personal preference.
