I have killed at least a dozen with a standard Ruger 10/22 at 8-27 yards from my bathroom window, which I have renamed "the Texas Book Depository." It requires a headshot, and the Secret Service can't help them.
In the acreage two lots over, they cut down half a dozen black walnut trees, and at least as many oaks, ostensibly to make room for houses. The flood of homeless squirrels has been tough, but scoped .22 springer pellet rifles are great.
I am pretty sure as soon as they build houses on those lots, they will probably plant trees.
I’ve used the CCI quiet segmented HP, and they work pretty good on squirrel at backyard range, 50 ft or so. They will not cycle a semi auto and you need to be careful with shot placement. I think the box says 700 FPS. They aren’t much louder than a pellet gun.
It is already answered but for further 1st hand experience reporting......if your gun groups them well they are entirely adequate at 25-30 yards with well placed shots. A buddy and I wiped out a couple of prairie dog towns with .22s. We started early and close with Super Colibris and CB longs and then continued throughout the day at ranges up to 225yards. The long shots made for more misses than hits but at those distances they gave us multiple opportunities. By late afternoon there were no more targets.... and the landowner reported later that he couldn't believe it.....he wasn't seeing any prairie dogs at all!
