I am looking for data on a standard range of chamber pressures for 12 guage pump shotguns.

What's the safe range for say, Mossberg 500 & Remington 870 and similar.

Also, are the firearms designed with anything like
1/5th of their breaking strength as the standard, such as what OHSA requires for wire rope, chain, etc.

In other words, at five times the standard operating chamber pressure, the gun chamber/barrel will burst?

Thanks Dave. Just wanted to be educated as to the safe parameters to be worked with.

Guess I'll just put the 105mm artillery shell away, and mail it back to the company, and tell them it won't work. :what::what::what:

I do not know that shotgun manufacturers release their proof load data. SAAMI publishes the pressure specs for standard loads.

i betting that the locking lugs would break before the barrel bursts

more than likely the worst you could get would be a bulge in the barrel

I got a link to a Lyman reloading data site where you plug in the guage, shot weight, shell size and brand and all that.

Then I noticed that the chamber pressures showed a range generally between 7000 psi to 10000+ psi and I did not know whether the site was tossing out "safe" pressures, or merely the resultant pressures of BruceRDucer's "bigger-is-better" shell reloading specifications.:cuss::cuss::cuss:

Knowing me, I would probably blow up a gun through sheer stupidity; but I guess if Dave McCracken says that pressures go up to 13,000 psi, I will be in a safe range.:):):):):):what:

I do know that test loads are nowhere near 5 times max pressure. OSHA mandates the 5 times test for lift devices, but lifting design rule is 7 times. ASME pressure test is less than 3 times design operating pressure for boilers and steam piping.
If you have ever seen a burst barrel you know you don't ever want to be near another one.

IIRC, the 13K load was a 1.5 oz short Maggie Numb in a 2 3/4" case.

According to divers loading manuals here, most loads run 8-10K PSI. That includes buck.

I like the lower pressure loads. Just conservative,I guess....
