I am looking for any help and pointers on starting a local militia. I want to cover common defense but also do public relation work. My area does not have a militia and should have one. So any words of advice and pointers would help me help my community and help keep the state of Ohio a little more safe.

Depending on where in Ohio you are located, I may be game. But, I have no info on starting a militia.

IMO, only the state has any constitutional authority to start or maintain a militia.

IMO, the place to start is the Ohio Secretary of State's office and Ohio's registry of state regulations. You already may be part of the "militia" and not know it.

you might want to call it a Civil Defense Organization rather than a militia. The media has done a pretty good job demonizing that word.

I'd like to see States establish/re-establish the militia. Provide for at least minimal training and use it as intended. I would not be averse to also using the milita to help knock down problems in high crime areas and gang related issues.

    Safe from whom or what?

I'd begin with a "Neighborhood Watch" type of program with related or secondary grassroots efforts. Training, communications, training, medical, training, media (winning their hearts and minds?), training, logistics, and training, etc are all needed when dealing with Militia type matters. Think enlarged, adult Boy Scout Troop (definitely formed on military type grouping).

In fact, while I wouldn't say BSA is THE answer, Lord Baden Powell (and ET Seton) had certain things in mind when he formed that organization and it might do to borrow heavily in a similar slant.

Association with local Sheriff Search and Rescue might be another useful direction.

Questions I would need to answer might be:
    What is the purpose?
What is the Plan to accomplish said purpose?
On what/whose Authority will it fall under or serve?
    Who will fund/pay any bills?
    How will it be organized?

(and please Lord, don't let it be old, fat, out of shape guys, dressed in camo, running around in woods shooting guns, then retiring for the night to go off to drink beer, feeling good about scaring squirrels and making noise alone) Seriously, if your plan is to help your community and be of service, I'm all for it. I'd just be leery of my parenthetical snark or of any political factions that might develop within. Remain service oriented, apolitical (if possible) and non-threatening.

I'm not sure how to organize it...but I'm pretty sure it'll (sadly) add a new, fat jacket to your F.B.I. file.

    Baba Louie offers good advice.

Look to what the most successuful militia operation in my memory did (the Korean shop owners in LA during the race riot anarchy)--you didn't see their guns til they were needed.

With the LA riots, the insanity of Katrina, freakin' Osama groupies, etc., I gotta' wonder who's asking "Safe from what?". Hell, take your pick.

Make sure you are squeaky clean---past, friends, family members, church, and everyone else you have ever been in contact with since Birth. Oh yeah I wouldn't be going to any questionable internet sites either. Cuz you are about to be investigated. Heck I'll probably get investigated for replying with this.

    Amen.

The "militia" thing is a touchy subject, especially in the media. Make sure any material you put out AKA flyers, websites, meetings, makes it clear that you are a community organization with a mandate to help those in need. DON'T make it an "anti Federal government" organization. That's the quickest way to make sure you don't get any sane members, and that you'll have the authorities all over you.

A community disaster/anti-crime/possible terrorist act response group would be a real great thing in many communities. Similar to the Boy Scouts, only for adults, and with real goals and missions. Less camping and badges and more actual response training. But make sure you get the public good will. Without it, you will be labeled a cook anarchist group, and that will be the end of that.

We don't advocate or promote illegal activities on THR. Private military organizations and training are illegal in at lest 28 states.

    This is closed.
