stevens 5100.. opinions?

Seriously.. found one for 350.. dipped in camo, probably a plastic stock.

Hows the action? Not looking for a round of skeet every day, but as a every now and again.
 
Should be fine for your intended purpose. As long as it locks up tight, it should be gtg.
Have you ever shot a sxs? The only reason I ask is they don't fit me well at all the the recoil tends to be a bit stout.
 
Kind of expensive for a Stevens. I can buy new Stevens pump shotguns for around $200. Buds Gun Shop has a combo with a 5 shot magazine tube with a 28" barrel and a 7 shot magazine tube with a 18.5" barrel for $230 + FFL.
 
Deer.. a pump and a sxs shotgun are completely different beasts. Suggesting that I buy a pump cheaper, or even comparing a cheap pump from a company vs. a cheap sxs from the same company isn't logical.
 
To much dinero for a 5100 used. Don't care if it is camo painted, still to much. Should go in the range of 150 to 200. at least around here that's the going price
 
According to J.T. Callahan, Savage, Stevens, Fox historian, the 5100 is basically a Model 311 or 5151 with a slightly different frame design that was made between 1941 and 1948. A lot of the early Stevens sxs's with 28" barrels were choked mod/full. They were also sold by Sears marked as Eastern Arms 101.x

If there is no side to side or up and down movement of the closed barrels with the forearm off, tight at the face, and also no rust or pitting in the bores, I think it should be worth at least $250. I might even consider $300 if it weren't for the camo "paint."

I have a 16 ga. 5100 in really nice shape with a wood stock that I got for $300. I shot my first 25 straight EVER with it shooting wobble clays where most of the shots are 20-35 yards. It is heavier that most of my other O/U's and sxs's, and I am partial to 16 ga. guns.
