Stevens 66B

Howdy. I just picked up a Stevens .22 bolt action tube fed 66B. Couple of questions...

front sight blade appears to be missing, anywhere to get one? I found something listed as the part on www.NUMRICH.com, but the image loos nothing like what wil fit.

I would actually be fine sidestepping the front sight and adding rails to mount a scope (drill/tap). This would be my first attempt at that, so based on the pics, does that look possible on the reciever?

I would recomend a gun smith for any drilling or tapping.

well, guess those just became the least of my problems. Just went to the range and turns out my $75 pawn shop rifle has no firing pin. I got home and removed the bolt, and have NO idea how to get it apart to get to the pin housing. I could buy the pin and do it myself, if I knew how to get the bolt apart. The front twists and stops, but there are no pins to punch out.

Tried to find an online schematic, but no dice. If I end up taking this to a smith and dropping more than I paid for it...

Maybe this should be moved to the gunsmithing section?

Sorry about the pin, but if you need a schematic, try posting over at Rimfirecentral. There may not be one, but if there is, somebody over there will know where to find it. Or you can probably get directions from a member.

Black: Your best bet for replacing the front site is a gunsmith. My 66B also lost its front site and a gunsmith took care of it fairly easy. Don't know about the firing pin, though. It does appear that the bolt can come apart, but I have not done it.

I would say its probably worth having a gunsmith work on it, or at least putting in extra effort to find out a way to take apart the bolt. I've never patterned it, but my 66B seems to be extremely accurate. Word of caution, however: don't dry fire it, ever. Mine is having extraction problems due to the chamber rim being deformed due to dry firing.

My first rifle!

You are missing the front sight clip and front sight hood as well as the front sight.

The target model came with different front sight apertures; post, bead, and 3 sizes of round peep.

The the leaf rear sight folded down and there was a rear of receiver target peep sight with different size apertures built in.

I lost these sight parts, I made my own front sight and clip.

Thanks for the replies. I called e gun parts today and got the pin, pin spring, front sight, and bolt pin (I removed it last night and the thing was deformed and NEVER going back in). I also found a firing pin which was snapped clean at the base.

I would have had no problems going to a smith. I actually tried that before ordering the parts. Sorry to say the local smith doesn't work on Stevens 66B .22 bolt actions . No kidding. "We don't touch those" is how I was cut off in mid sentence describing my problem. Well, I don't touch smiths with that crap attitude and no professionalism whatsoever. That is the 2nd time this smith has been jerky to deal with. No more tries.

Anyhow, I'll update when the parts get in, hoping they are as straight forward as they seem.

I read your post when doing a search on this rifle for info on the internet .This seemed like a good forum to be in so I registered so I could add my 2 cents.
I recently had aStevens "Buckhorn " 66B given to me by a friend of my wife who was nervous about it being in her house [it was her fathers]I offered to teach her about it and guns but no interest so she gave it to me.
It is a little rough ,but ,I've seen worse,and it's got extraction and feeding problems which 'm working on [$50.00 in parts] .They do seem like a finicky rifle but ,she shoots like a dream.The feed system seems the most finicky and this is "nearly" the same one used in the Stevens 87A . I have heard some people say some gunsmiths don't like them but my 87A works beautiful.
The bolt will come apart and it sounds like your trying at the right spot .I got mine apart to clean it ,but ,the rear section I did not mess with as its pin is a blind one and it looks like it has to be drilled out.
Mine has a standard 3/8" dovetail front sight and a rear leaf sight,also standard ,but ,It is drilled and tapped and milled for the peep sight also so I'll keep an eye out for that sight also.
Its finish is well worn so when I get it running I might consider refinishing it but I do have reservations about that ,even though it's not a highly collectable rifle and isn't likely to ever be one.
Where are the rollstamps on yours? Mine has a regular Stevens rollstamp on the top and a "second" more ornate "Buckhorn "one on the right side almost underneath the barrell which is strange as I saw another and it was marked "buckhorn" on the top position. Also,the Target sight version was actually supposed to be model No. 066 B but it seems to be an easy job to change sights as mine is milled for the target sight but marked as Model 66 B.
I'm sorry if I rambled but yours is the only post I've found on this rifle and maybe you have some info I don't know.I hope this helps!

In addition ,I discovered by looking at my 87A bolt ,that the two extractors in my 66B[also the same ]were put in wrong by a previous owner,that is the right one was put on the left side and the left one in the right side of the bolt. I reversed them and it ejects properly now but still has issues with extraction and feeding ,I think if I find the extraction problems the feeding will also be cured.

Well, got the parts changed out and it works like a charm. The replacement front sight caused me shooting 5" high @ 10yds, so I went back to the stock and its fine. Feeding and extraction are pretty smooth so far. Pretty happy for a $100 rifle.

I'll look into those stamps when I get a chance.

I installd a new extractor but screwed up on the fitting and had to order two more[1 extra ,just in case!] this time I got it right and as I expected ,the feeding problems are also fixed.For your info,if you have one hang up in the chamberand open the bolt all the way,the lifter will ,of course rise up and push another round past the retaining spring and up against the round waiting to be pushed into the chamber which won't push because of the stuck round and unlike a clip you can't push them down to clear it either and so the feeding problem!
