Last December's American Handgunner had a writeup by Will Dabbs (generally like his stuff), praising the Steyr M9-A2.
Had a fling with Steyr pistols some years ago, and mine were not stone reliable, and they only offered 10 round magazines.
So they were traded away, and a local shop didn't even want to take one in trade. The counterman said he lost his ass on the last Steyr.
In the intervening years, an AUG has softened my attitude, and I might give one another try.
Have to admit liking the low bore axis and feel in the hand, and even the trapezoid sights kind of grew on me.
Liked the looks of the trigger safety, with the flippy-do thing retreating smoothly into the trigger when squeezed. Why Glock insists on the ugly, cheap looking flippy do, I can't imagine.)
So, how do yinz feel about the newest Steyr variation?
Thanks,
Moon

Yes, The original M9 A-1’s were offered in 40 SW.

The-only reason I never bought one was because the grip was very slick. As evidencedby Dan-0‘s pic above having grip tape.

But the new A-2‘s came out with this great grip treatment, I bought one.

While I have my fair share of polymer guns, I’m not a fan. But this guns shoots great! I was used to the goofy sights by the second mag.

I found no disappointments with the gun. I came so close to buying another one.

Content with an AUG & an L40/357SIG-A1, I had no plans on venturing into the world of A2 MFs ... but that all changed when I stumbled on someone from the Steyr Club Forum SCREAMING about Bereli(FL) & their $325 M9-A2 MFs. I jumped on the wagon, paid an additional $50 & ended with an OD green-framed M9.

As comfortable as the L40 is in-hand, the A2 is even more so with the interchangeable grip panels & back straps. Not a whole lot more to add to what's already been said about the A1 & A2's excellent triggers; low bore axis; triangle-trapezoid sights; performance & reliability.

IMO, four factors cause folks to shy away from Steyr A1 & A2s: Their appearance; weak marketing; the tri-trap sight system & the near-total absence of aftermarket support/offerings - to my knowledge, BT Guide Rods is the sole remaining source for Steyr (pistol) aftermarket parts. Regarding the absence, with Steyr & HK there is not a huge demand nor need for aftermarket parts - I digress, but I recall a conversation I once had with Bar-Sto's, Irv Stone III as to why his company didn't mfg./offer HK barrels; to which he replied: "We used to, but there was and is still zero demand for them".

That said, as with the Glocks, I ditched the L40's polymer guide for a BT Guide Rod steel counterpart and also added an RCM 357 Sig barrel, but only because of the chambering - which, in retrospect, is the primary reason I purchased the (then) close-out-priced L40-A1.

I almost bought one last spring. They were priced low at the time, but they didn’t come cut for an optic. So I skipped it for a Walther with an optic cut, which cost considerably more back then.

I had an M9-A2 for a minute. For some reason, this pistol tied with my old Taurus PT-638 in being the most difficult pistol for me to shoot accurately. Frankly, I struggled to even hit a normal sized pistol target at all at 25 feet. I don't blame the gun. Sometimes, some guns just don't work for some people, considering ergos, sights, eyesight, and many other factors. I wouldn't mind trying one again someday.

How do you like the See All sight?
Pros and cons like anything else .
No battery , it’s small , durable and works well with my old eyes .
You still have to line up 2 points like open sights but easier to see . Takes some getting used to , but wasn’t bad for me . Takes the same footprint as one of the Hellcat red dots . I mainly wanted to try it and it was different so why not .

There's a voice in the back of my head, saying the older model was made in .40S&W.
Actually like the looks of the A2 compact.

It was . Would love one but threaded barrels are practically non-existent so that killed it for me . Very little aftermarket support for Steyr.

I never tried the A2 version but I have an M9A1 that has been a great performer and has made it into my carry rotation. The grip angle is like a Glock that requires either a bit of training or a conscious effort to correct without naturally aiming high. I do like the trapezoidal sights but if you don’t like them, they can be swapped out.
