Steyr M9 - Extract problem

Hey, gang! Long time no visit! I have been stuck over at www.falfiles.com while I have been building my STG58 FAL, so I haven't been here for awhile.

I have a Steyr M9 and I love the gun, except that lately it is having BIG problems extracting the round from the chamber. The extractor has always seemed to be quite tight and would actually leave marks/grooves on the rim of the case that was ejected. But now I am having a FTE problem at least one in ten, problem as bad as 5 in ten. Cleaned the gun very diligently. Took the extractor out, cleaned and oiled well and put back in.

Does anyone have any ideas on this, or have you seen this before?

I love my gun, but it is pretty much a big paper weight right now!

Mine does the same thing. I've found, however, that it depends on the ammunition I use. I can't go through a box of Sellier & Bellot with a failure to extract. Everything else I have tried works much better: Winchester USA, UMC, PMC.

I have also noticed that the extractor is very stiff. Supposedly there is an extractor upgrade available. However, since the serial number on mine is over 26000, I would have thought that it had the upgrade.

you may want to check the manual to get an idea of what extractor and housing is like. the spring holding it in pushes a pin into extractor. sometimes it may need slight adjustment. also using wolf and other steel cased ammo is not great. the steel case has a laquer on it which will build up inside the chamber. if you use it clean up the chamber.

I'll give Diamand Trail Shooters a call and see what they can do to help. Mine has a serial number just over 26000 as well, but who knows.

I really like the pistol and the way it feels, but it has to go bang every time or it is just a toy.

BTW - my problem was with my reloads, factory reloads and Winchester (in the value pack box from Walmart!!) When it first started happening, I thought it was just that I hadn't done a good job of cleaning, so I was very specific is what I cleaned and how much I cleaned it, then I cleaned it again. The gunsmith at the range said he thought the problem was a little carbon build up on the extractor, but that didn't fix anything. Most people don't know a lot about the Steyr M series, so this forum, and know the contact above should help.

But if anyone else has any ideas, I am all ears!

After I had my Steyr refinished it started having the same problem. The first 50 rounds would extract but the next 50 would start to fail. With about 20 rounds left it would fail just about every other round.

I ordered a new extractor from USA STEYR but haven't installed it yet.
My serial # is in the 006XXX range and the new extractor is exactly the same as my old one. The pin thats connected to the spring has an angled/ramped edge that contacts the extractor.

When installing this part should the ramp on this pin be facing away/out from the gun or in towards the gun? I can't tell by looking at the manual and I have been able to get the part in both ways.

That is a GOOD question. I took mine out to inspect and clean when the problem first started and then put it back in the way I thought was right. BUT, I may have done it wrong (I hope it is that easy).

Anybody that has the specifics on this could help two frustrated people out.

Looking at the manual (p.14) it looks like the ramp of that pin should be facing outward away from the gun on reassembly. So the longer part of the pin should be on the outside.

if that pin is not right you will no it should leave a gap and should have extractor problems providing the extractor doesnt fly out.
