My Local Gun Shop had this for 240.00 (on consignment). :scrutiny:

It has been re-blued (but competently), and the DA is a touch stiff, but I can help that.

All of the numbers match, and the sucker still has the U.S. Property stamp and the ordnance marking.

This may be the best gun deal I've found this year. :D

Nice ~ now you got me searching Gun Broker and just when I was happy with my collection.

Anyone with more expertise with these guns recognize this cartouche?

Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

Thanks,
KR

GHS = Gilbert H. Stewart, chief inspector for the ordnance district including S&W. Applied by inspectors working for him to several different USGI smallarms over a long period.

I am only just a little bit envious...honest, just a little bit! (LOL)

Seriously, nice find and excellent price.

Jim,

Thank you for the information! To be honest, I bought the revolver because I felt like I was getting a price too good to pass up. The more I look at it, however, the more I think I'll keep it. :)

I have some good news for you.
Those dished grips, if they are original are worth a minimum of $125 just for the grips.
A GHS marked 1917 in original condition is worth an easy $700+.
Owner and the gun shop had no idea what they had.
Good find.

As far as I can tell, they seem original. All of the serial numbers match, butt, barrel, and cylinder, and the grips look like what I would expect for a pistol of this vintage. As you can see in the photos, they are well-worn.

They have no markings at all that I can find, and are simply slab-backed pieces of walnut with a blued-steel screw and brass escutcheons.

I'm thinking of stoning the trigger surfaces today to smooth up the DA action. I've done this to 20+ S&Ws over the years without any problems and at great improvement to the DA fluidity.

Also, I've decided to pick up a military holster for this thing, either an original or good repro. Anyone know where I can scrounge one?

Thanks again!

I had one back in the '80s. It was a great gun, highly accurate, even with an apparent bullet strike in the side of the barrel! I wish I'd never traded it, although I think I traded it for an even more useful (to me) gun, my 4" 29-2.
