stopped in at Wal-Mart...

Never had WallyWorld I.D. check for ammo here (SW Idaho) pistol or otherwise.

I have noticed a somewhat irritating behavior though. I call it a "soft limit". They will only put out 1 or 2 boxes of the popular stuff. If you leave and come back a few hours later, there's another couple of boxes behind the counter. If you ask, it's "nope, that's all we got".

Yes. There's no law in NY requiring you to produce or have a permit to buy ammo, but Walmarts here require it for anything commonly used in a handgun

have you talked to the store manager? is it all chinamarts in NY? i've never heard of such thing in my life, that's ridiculous! i would boycott them too.

Yes I believe that they do this in all Wal-Marts in NY. In NY State you can't even own or touch a handgun without a pistol permit, and each handgun & caliber is registered and printed on your permit.

I noticed that it depends on what store you go to too. On of the stores asks to see your permit but a different one looks at your permit AND checks to see if you own a gun in that caliber!

RIght now the two wally worlds I go to have alternating shimpents of RWS (orange box) and Winchester (white box)....one will get the RWS, while the other gets the Win, then vice-versa.

Knowing that made it super-easy for me to know where to go to get the best ammo deals.

yeah my local chinamarts have a buttload of that orange box RWS in stock for $16.97/50rounds. what a rip.

why did they decide to not offer as much of the cheaper WWB (which every other business in america that sells ammo has in stock), and instead go with $17 9mm ammo that no one's buying?

I keep seeing the same exact amount in stock each time i go, and it has dust on it lol

nonsensical business decision by chinamart, for sure!

I did go to the local chinamart and get some .22 Win bulk. They wanted to see ID that assured of residency. I asked the clerk If he thought I was from mars or whatever, He smiled and said that the security camera was on him and he HAD to do it, with a smile and roll of his eyes. Also the GF bought some and he had to get hers separately. He said one customers ammo out at a time.:confused:I feel sorry for the employees.:banghead:

Sometimes it sounds like walmart is making up firearm/ammunition law as they go.

Just store policy... Nobody is forcing anybody to buy anything there, but if you decide to you've got to put up with their crazy rules... Since I don't reload it's the cheapest place to buy bulk ammo. $32 for 100 rounds of .45ACP at Wal-Mart or $59 at Gander Mtn. for the same exact box of ammo... I save all of my brass though, someday I will start to reload.

Yup - they weren't even willing to listen. Wal-Mart has its own policies that extend further than the law does, and they won't bend to common sense.

Within the past few months, I've been seeing more ammo on the shelves at Wal-Mart. Found some WWB .45 auto and snatched up a couple boxes. I sold one to a friend who missed out. They turned up on the shelves again a couple weeks later, so I bought three more:)

Need to schedule a range visit soon. . .

The local wally-world here always asks if the ammo is for a handgun. I though they were keeping tabs or something, but found out that if you say it's for a rifle, they'll sell you pistol ammo if your 18 or older.

Yeah, pretty pointless. I guess it just puts them in the clear legally speaking.

go onto walmart's website and write a complaint to the corporate office about how they're defying NY state law. there's a place on their site specifically for corporate complaints. they ask you the store(s) involved. i've done it before. you will receive a phone call with a response (hopefully one you'll like)

Been seeing more ammo become available @ WM lately, but they have raised prices. Used to be $13.47 for a brick of Federal .22LR. It's now $18.97!!!!

There is a shortage of .38spl, .45, .32, and .380 here. Every once in a while you may catch one box or the other but never .380. I wonder where it is going, or if there is a stockboy hoarding .380 ammo.

Now its been a few years, and my memory is not so good to begin with. I easily could be wrong; however, I seem to recall the local talking heads saying something about suing Walmart for selling a shotgun and/or ammo to the Trolley Square shooter.

If that's the case you can't really blame them for being paranoid.

Strange thought all the ID I had to produce was Driver's licence to prove I'm old enough to purchase the ammo.

Do you think the panic buying of ammo is over, or at least slowing down?

It is slowing down for sure. Most likely because people just don't have the money, or the space to store more ammo. :)

Is it completely legal for walmart to require more than is necessary under the law to obtain ammo?
