Strange find in time capsule

Hey all. First post here. Been sculking around for a bit, lots of good reading & info.
I have an FR-8 Spanish Mauser that I bought over twenty years ago. The stock & barrel configuration has a second tube under the front end of the barrel, looks almost like the gas tube of the CETME is was made to mimic, just under instead of over. Anyway, it's more of a front sight brace than anything but they made it hollow and removeable to serve as storage.
I've tried twice to open it but stopped for fear of causing damage. Until yesterday, I had watched a pretty decent documentary on youtube where the guy removed it and opened it up, made it look easy and at least let me see how it came apart.
So, probably missed the opportunity for "long story short" here, but I got it open! Was a struggle but I was convinced there was something in there and figured it must be old, could be something cool. Well, first was the god awful smell. Nauseating, like you would hope it was only something dead and rotting but it must be worse. Looked like grease at first so I go probing into it with a pick and there's solid stuff. I pull out chunks, thought they might be cleaning patches at first but stuff was very fibrous. I pull out more, things are greasy but still lots of fibers and weird little things that almost looked like seeds but they have a shape like a miniature vial. They look like they must be man made, not sure if the fibers are attached. They look so familiar I should know what they are but almost like that information is from a previous life... Must be from around the 1950's when the rifle was made. I'm wondering if they were some kind of grease packet you pinch the tip off of and squeeze the grease out. But they are so small.

Apologies for the diatribe. Anyone have a clue?

 

Some Spanish soldier was smuggling (or more likely storing) dope in his rifle.

Lucky for me, my FR8 actually had a cleaning kit in there, lol.

I had a Schmidt-Ruben M11 years ago that had the former Swiss owners civil defense registration papers stashed under the butt-plate.

 

I check every gun I get under the butt plate, I have found some cool stuff.

 

Yah, I was really hoping for something more cool then a stanking pile of glop..
Cleaning kit would have been cool. I'm pretty sure that tube has never been opened since it was installed.
I always check under the butt plate, typically have the whole stock off in no time, have never found anything yet.

 

The FR-8 is such a great, and underappreciated rifle. Good metallurgy, handy size, relatively cheap and procurable ammo.....not to mention the awesome rear sight. I sold off all my other Mausers when I got mine.

Of course my Dad is getting ready to move down here and bring his 20-30 Mausers with him, so theres that, lol.

 

Mine was empty, alas, when I first opened it. Better that than some well decayed antique weed!

 

Like a morphine syrette? Far as I can tell, no. Nothing sharp/syringe like at the tips. In fact I dug out the rest, found more and they have somewhat longer stems on them. I've been wondering if they're some kind of seed pod that has an oil that was used as a rifle lube. I know Castor Oil was refined into a high end engine oil. Where the name "Castrol" came from. But they don't look anything like Castor beans/seeds.
I am more convinced they are something organic though, as it looks like there are fibers growing out from the fat base and that there was a thicker "husk" of some kind around the bulb part. I did squeeze one and a thick oil came out but it's been difficult to look them over too close, the smell is seriously turning my stomach so bad I nearly lost my lunch yesterday.
Large bear walked through the yard last night, he didn't want any part of them either...

 

What's left of Jimmy Hoffa? It could happen.

Any chance that FR-8 spent anytime guarding opium fields in some middle eastern country?

That's got to be it. I second papaver rhoeas. It is native to Spain.
