Strange Shotgun

I saw a shotgun once that the trigger guard moved to release the break action. Has anyone seen such a shotgun? If so, so you know who made it?

Savage still makes a "retro" .22 single shot rifle like that.

I think that it was once common, at least for inexpensive single shots.

Are you talking about the old Ithaca that looks a la Lever Action, but really works off a Martini action (functionwise)? If so, I have seen plenty of them, usually at affordable prices.

I believe I once saw an imported farm-grade singleshot shotgun
which vaguely resembled our typical Savage or H&R single shot.
but no seperate opening lever: the conventional looking trigger
guard was pulled back to unlatch the barrel. The metal work
looked like it was chewed out by metal eating beavers.

"Thumb-snap" shotguns (with an opening lever inside the front bow of the trigger-guard) were once fairly popular among English manufacturers.

You are talking about the French made "Darne" shotguns. The retraction of the breech block, ejection of the fired shell and reloading of the new round is all done by pulling back on the trigger guard. Works like a pump action but instead of using the forearm to cycle the action, the trigger guard and related breech parts are pulled backwards each time to do the same thing. It seems awkward at first but it actually works pretty good when you get used to it. The Darne are quality guns, not cheap.

There is a cheap import, I think by the name of Saiga the people who make the .223 and .308s semis that look like AKs that made a single shot scatter gun along the same lines.

Don't the new "Spartan" brand shotgun that Remington imports open by that mechanism?

Same as like on the T/C Contender, you pull back on a nub coming off the triggerguard to break the action.

I believe the Spartan line is made in Russia, perhaps tied into the Baikal factories? I'm sure some Russophile here has the full story.

Saw them at Wal-Mart while waiting for an oil change; they're priced $10 below the H&R single-shots. Sounds like Remington is getting aggressive about that chunk of the market. It'd be a shame to have H&R fade away after all these years: we actually ran across a Bedouin in Iraq carrying an H&R-marked 12ga single. Those shotguns have gone all kinds of places.

I think he is talking about the Stoeger Single Barrel Shotguns. The whole trigger guard slides to the rear to open the action. Or the Spartan Single Barrel Shotguns (which has a lever action like the lamented Ithica Super 66 Single Shot).

kjeff50cal is correct. I saw a shotgun once durning my hunter's saftey coruce in Kansas. (The hunters saftey cource is required in Kansas and was put on by the local Ducks Unlimited. They did a great job.)

At one of the stations where they teach how to go over a fense, one of the shoutguns operated by pulling back the trigger guard. I tell others about this shotgun and they think I am carzy. I will now find a pciture and have ti as proof. I would not find buying one.
