That picture is kind of idiotic. They put a magpul on the magazine inserted in the weapon but no magpuls on the mags inside the pouches where they were intended to be used.
The way it's supposed to be-> When you put the mags in a pouch with the feed lips facing down, the magpul will be sticking out the top where you can stick your finger in the loop and yank it out real quick. No fumbling for mags, just grab the loop and pull it out. Hence MagPul.

so basically just used to make grabbing easier out of a pouch...duh.

But, there's enough of us here to figure it out.
The mag-pull things seem like a good idea, for getting the mag out of the pouch, and help protect the mag when you eject it on concrete, like a rubber bumper on a 1911 mag.

Mag-Puls also facilitate tactical reloads where you want to keep a partially loaded mag. You grab a new mag in your hand, then hook a finger through the loop of the Mag-Pul of the mag with your left as you hit the release with the index finger of your right hand. Now let it drop and rotate your hand to insert the fresh mag. Pocket the partially loaded mag.

Most of the "Tacticool tactical Gear" companies sell them for inflated prices.
While http://www.bizplaces.com/magpul/ sells them for $10 a piece, I've seen some place charging $30 for each little piece of rubber.
I personally think these are mostly irrelevent pieces of gear that take up more money than anything else. I'd personally save $100 from spending on 10 Magpulls to buy 750 rounds of ammo or a training class to learn to shoot better.
In many ways I see these the same way I see the vertical AR grips on semi-auto AR's: cluttering irrelevencies.

I saw this once on a training magazine and was trying to figure out what the person was trying to do.
I think that statement alone demonstrates that the Magpul is a "relavent" piece of gear for at least some user types.
I admit that I bought three several years ago, and found I didn't need them, but since troops in combat have been fashioning several variations of these for a VERY long time (Viet Nam era at least) proves to me that they are apparently needed by someone. It's just a new, cleaner, more secure way to increase your gripping ability when you're sweaty, wet, bloody, wearing gloves, etc. rather than the duct tape, or parachord through the floorplate, or innertube on the mags, etc.
They don't do squat for me at the range... except that they might possibly cushion my mags when they hit the ground during a match.
But several enlisted guys on AR15.com (including at least one Canadian) swears by them for actual field use.Magpul also has a newer version called "Ranger Tabs" that replace the magazine floor plate entirely rather than slipping on.
