Will the bolt close over a full 8-block clip with one in the chamber?

I told you it was a stupid question...;)

    No.
But you can have seven in the clip and close the bolt on an empty chamber if you wanted to.

DO NOT attempt to close the bolt on a fully loaded 8 round clip.
People have tried this in the past, and damaged the rifle.

What happens is, forcing the bolt to over-ride a fully loaded clip bends the follower arm. When the arm gets bent, the rifle starts to eject partially loaded magazines.

WWII troops stationed just behind the lines were required to have empty chambers.
Some had the idea of forcing a fully loaded clip in and closing the bolt.
This would allow them to have an empty chamber but a full 8 rounds.
This led to the early clip ejection problem and orders not to do it.
