If I was shopping for me, it would be a different story, but right now I'm shopping for her. The first time I ever met her I showed her my CHL and we talked about guns. She said she hated them but I told her the story about how I happened to become a gun owner and she understood. We've worked out a great system of code words and compromises as we've lived under the same roof for a little over a year now and she started shooting with me - my childhood rifle, a Red Ryder BB gun - on Mother's Day.

Anyway, I want to continue easing her into the sport of shooting and .22LR seems like the natural successor. I have never shopped rifles before, so I don't even know where to start, but I'd like to find her something as close in size and function as I can get to that silly BB gun. Failing that, pump-action would be preferable.

Any ideas?

The basic Henry lever-action model (H001) is really nice, and inexpensive.

Mossberg Plinkster. $99 at Walmart... seen them for $70 to $80 at gun / pawn shops. Super lightweight and accurate. If she likes the BB rifle, she'll love the Plinkster.

+1 on the Henry.

If she likes the Red Ryder, the Henry is a decent rifle for not a lot of dollars. A Henry Golden Boy is about the most non-gun looking 22 I can think of - that is, non-intimidating to the non-gun person.

If she likes the lever gun, and you want to spend some dollars, I can think of none better than the Browing BL-22. Nicely made, with a 33 degree throw and a very smooth action. Quite a bit more money though.

A basic Henry will set you back about $250

In semi-auto, look into a Ruger 10/22. In bolt action, I'd try to find a CZ452.
Two great rifles. If it's for your girlfriend and she won't be using it a lot then wouldn't spen a lot of money on a really expensive rifle I bought my wife an expensive set of golf clube hoping that she'd enjoy the sport and come out with me more often and they just sit in the garage.

I cant remember who said it, but in another thread some one said "You have to own a 10/22, its the law" and that would be my suggestion

The first responder got it right. 10/22 for a semi-auto. CZ for a bolt.

Mike

10/22.
A LOT High Capacity mags ( preloaded by YOU ).:D
Sighted in with a scope.

Give it to her in a gift-wrapped box with a pretty pink ribbon and a flower.
Put the Shoot-n-C targets CLOSE or give her some targets that show utter destruction when shot.

She'll be hooked.
It's all in the presentation.

Then let her dominate you after the shooting session...yeah, that oughtta do it!

I would very strongly suggest the ruger 10/22 or marlin model 60.

Ridiculously simple to operate and they work.

Marlin also makes a lever .22 I think right?

do not get her a 10.22, I do not consider them to be a beginners' 22. they can be innaccurate, unreliable, and frustrating. By the way, I have one. and it is wonderful. now that it has about 100 bucks or so, in modification, not too mention another 100 bucks or so , in extras, and goodies.
So no 10.22. Do not get a lever gun either, too much movement, to much moving at the bench, if sitting down, other problems, with takedown, cleaning, etc. What you want to go for here is simplicity, the simpler the better1!!! Accuracy is the next most important thing, as new shooters tend to like shooting better when they can actually hit small, teeneh stuff.
Start with one of two choices. marlin mod 60, semi auto.
can be had at any pawn shop for 50 bucks or so. if you do this route, make sure it looks very new and clean, as you don't know about it, neither does she. Unless you have a friend you can take with you, to check it out , to make sure it works. Older ones may have the feed throat problem, and that would ruin any fun.
the other version of this is the marlin 795, it us the same as the mod 60, but it is magazine fed, and very reliable. the mod 60 is tube fed, and will hold 14 to 17 rounds in the tube. the 795 holds 10 rounds in the mag.
Both of the above weapons are universally known to be very accurate, you cannot get more accurate, until you either step up to a cz, or get ready to spend a big bunch of money, on a more high end rifle. A marlin will even smoke a cz from time to time.
Savage also makes a mod 64, that is semi auto, that is sold in just about every gunshop or store. also very accurate and reliable. the mags are big and heavy , but allways work. the reason I don't favor the savage is, they take allen wrenches to take apart. If you were , say , on a shooting range, or in the woods, or driving around out in the backwoods, and needed to take down your rifle, you you more likely have a flathead screwdriver,(heck , even a quarter) or an Allen wrench?
next would be a bolt action, again any marlin , old or new, in the 81 series.
I have one made in 1937, and it is fabulous!!!! the new ones are mod 981's and will shoot short, long, and long rifle 22 rounds. you could buy some short, and long rounds, they are much quieter, than a typical long rifle round, because they use a smaller charge, and a lighter bullet. these will be new, about 150 dollars or less, and can be had used in gunstores, or again at pawnshops, for 100 or less. unless you know guns, allways take someone with experience , to buy from a pawn shop.
Cz again, will be a very beautiful and accurate bolt gun, for 300 bucks or less.

If she is used to a lever, then a henry or marlin are great!!!! but they will cost you some bucks, 300 or more easy!!! Also the mosserg plinkster is nice and cheap, and it actually has a fully adjustable rear site, for a 100 dollar gun , that is not bad, also extra magazines are sold at walmart, Academy, and just about any gunshow you go to. Gunshops will not have or carry anything for the mossberg plinkster , though, so keep that in mind.
Again, do not start off someone with a ruger 10.22, unless you buy it from a friend , and you have test shot about 100 rounds through it , yourself. Otherwise, you could be in for a frustrating first day at the range with one.

Naw...my suggestion will net him some, uh, 'appreciation'...:neener:

Gotta be the 'stick it in and keep going' kinda thing for this female beginner! ;)

There's something to be said about not having to stop and reload too soon.

I thought I might add she shoots that worn out BB gun about as well as I do so with a new .22 she's going to be amazing. Thanks for all the info everybody!

Whoever said take her out and let her pick for herself nailed it. The one that speaks to her is the right one.

Not sure who makes your inaccurate, unreliable and frustrating 10/22 but mine are made by Ruger and they are amazing guns right out of the box. Your description does not fit mine at all.
I say get her a 10/22 or a Henry.

Henry if you aren't too serious.

Marlin 39 if you figure you'll marry her. You wouldn't want that gun to walk out of your life, trust me.:D

Get her a 10/22 if and only if she doesn't mind cleaning the gun a bunch, and if she can see in the dark (otherwise get aftermarket sights).

welldoya, mine was unreliable, and inaccurate, out of the box. and i am not alone, many, many dedicated 10.22 shooters will tell you the same, and they love their Rugers, that is who makes mine as well. go here, check the ruger threads, and you will see!
http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/

after a squaring up of the bbl, new hammer, vq extractor, spring, plunger, bolt buffer, trigger job, s.s. takedown screw, torque wrench, and a few other little parts, it is fab!!!!
of course, amt, and volquartzen, and a few other custom makers , make all your ruger stuff as well, all you need is a Ruger receiver, really not even that for some of these makers, make their own receivers as well.
now I would hav eno probs telling someone to get a volquartzen, out of the box, it will be great. But chances are, to open that box will cost you over 1000. bucks.

I love my Remington 597. Got it at Dicks Sporting Goods a few weeks ago for $150 on sale...comes with a 3x9 scope on it too.

not the prettiest gun, but it more then makes up for it with its out of the box accuracy.
