Suggestions for CCW .22LR

Well take this anyway you want, in the pass I have carried a lot of small weapons semi auto type and never found one that work well for me. I stop carrying for awhile until one day a situration came up and I told myself I need to stop going to bars or stop buying dope from people and sending them to prison or get a weapon I can always have one me so I got a NAA .22lr I'm not saying that all you need but I understand the wants of someone that want to carry always but don't want to put up with a large weapon. Now days I'm back in uniform the most contact I have with bad guys is when I watch my guys bringing them in for booking and supervising the security in the court house. But when i'm off and I don't feel like carrying the snub nose the .22 goes in my pockect and it beat a rock.

be safe

Only CCW .22 rimfires I have EVER carried were these:

NAA Black Widow with .22MAG cylinder and
High Standard two-shot derringer in .22MAG.

I've had lots of pocket .22's in the past and NONE has been reliable. I've owned Wilkinson Sherry's, FTL Auto Nine's (same designer, different points in the production cycle). Also had Beretta and Taurus tip-barrels and a S&W 61. Though some were reliable with some ammo, I didn't want to trust my life on a dud, stovepipe, or misfire at the wrong moment.

Both the NAA and High Standard were safe and light to carry and 100% reliable. .22MAG is a good penetrator, but a poor stopper. A fair gun to have if you subscribe to the 'bring a gun' rule. When it's hot, it's nice to have something that will slip into a pocket.

Echo what others have said, get a .32.

he 22 magnum is acceptable

It isn't the size of the bullet as much as the shot placement that counts. Most confrontations are up close and a shot to the head with a 22 magnum is g\oing to put him down. So will a shot between the 2 chest pockets. In the latest issue of Handguns magazine, there was such an article about this topic, and the author concluded that bullet size does not trump shot placement. Read the article it is well written and documented as well. S&W makes a 10.4 oz 22 magnum revolver that to me fills the bill. I would not go to the semiautos in a rimfire because of reliability issues with this type of ammo for ccw. Just my 2 cents. sincerely Snooperman

I would suggest that if one chooses a.22 handgun for personal protection, it should at least have grips made from a lucky rabbits foot.

Old thread, but I'll play...doesn't fit the 'low cost' category, and a little big for many pockets, but if I had to pick a .22, how about the Grendel P30 (if you can find one)?

30 rounds of .22 mag seems about right for me!

Beretta Neos.
One of the best bottom feeders I've ever used. It'll shoot hi or standard velocity ammo without hiccup. It comes with two of the best mags I've ever had to load and the rail is just icing on the cake. I've shot Buckmarks, Walthers, Rugers, and consider the Neos to be the 1911 of .22 autos.

just recently stepped up to a J frame but carried a .22 for many years and have always felt practice is more important than caliber. X

Bersa 22lr

I have a BERSA 22LR,10rounds magazine + CCI Stinger.it's a nice pistol.

I think a .22 is not enough for ccw duty.

If I was going to use a .22 for this I would probably
get the NAA Black Widow and keep it loaded with
.22 WMR's.

I've carried .38 special snubbies, .357 mag SP101, S&W Model 60, it depends, if I'm in the mountains and may encounter a black bear/cougar, I take the Sp101. But most times, around town I do the taboo-thing - I actually carry a Bersa Firestorm22 loaded with CCI Stingers or Velocitors. I don't feel "under gunned". I'm not a policeman, therefore I do not intend on ever using "offensive" tactics. I'm a potential victim of attack, therefore my strategies are "defensive". I don't want to close with the BG, I want to distance myself from him. Read the studies, watch the security films of shoot-outs. I have yet to see some one drop in one of these real-life shoot-outs. In all that I've seen, even with many rounds fired, most shots miss, and the people that do get hit, run away. Regardless of caliber. To truly stop an attacker, with any confidence, you have to hit a central nervous system point. Again, regardless of caliber. Too many people get all hyped up over caliber. If you want a good little .22 concel carry, I suggest the Bersa Firestorm 22.

I didn't read every reply and realize this is an autoloader forum but the Smith and Wesson Models 317 in 22LR (8shot) and 351 in 22Mag (7shot), both around 10 1/2 ounces, would seem to fit the bill rather well.

I carry a Bersa Firestorm22

I carry a Bersa Firestorm 22, often and never feel "undergunned". I've packed .38 snubbies, SP101 357 mag ... but have settled for 'around town" carry with the FS22. And to your question, consider it. Hard to find, but I found TWO, in the same store, about a year ago. I snapped them both up, as fast as I could !

in the long distant pass, i have carried a .22lr for CCW.

i think i tried everything on the market...this was back in the mid-70's...and ended up carrying a West German Walther PP. it had close to the reliability and accuracy of the Ruger Auto...along with the High Standard (not the derringer)...which at least has a proven combat record.

surprisingly the next most reliable pistol was the Jennings.

i had a co-worker who went with a Beretta Minx for his BUG. when we tested it, we found the .25 ACP really was more reliable

I have an alloy framed Beretta 71. It is a very reliable, accurate pistol that digests every brand of .22LR ammo (including the cheap bulk packs).

This is a recurring thread on many forums. One I have responded to several times. I keep hearing how shot placement makes the sub bores adequate for self defense. While this may be true to some extent, (There are tons of documented cases to the contrary) I wonder how may among us can get good hits under the stress of fighting for our lives. I know many here can shoot the eyes out of cardboard at handshake ranges on a stationary target in the safety of the range. Wonder how many could even get a marginal hit out of a full magazine in a fight for their life. Nothing prepares you for the real thing, but try a little force on force training to get a wake up call. I carry the largest caliber I can based on a number of factors. Sometimes it's only a P3AT. It's smaller and lighter than a .22 with .380 power. If I should have to use my weapon to defend myself, I want to make a big a hole as possible. Perhaps the bad guy will bleed out before he kills me. Now if all I had, or could get, was a .22. I'd darn sure carry it! It's a personal choice, any handgun is a poor fight stopper. I'll take any advantage I can get, even if it's only a few thousands larger bullet.

a .22 is better than nothing and the question was posed so we should all respect the author's request.

still, the mall ninja joke made my stomach hurt. i especially liked the encrypting part.

Israeli Mossad used Beretta 70/71 correct? And they've actually had confirmed kills with it? Well then, I guess a Beretta 70/71 would do.

Well then, using applied logic:
There have been confirmed kills with a fondue fork. Therefore, it too is adequate.

If anyone feels a .22 is their best choice for personal defense, they have my blessing.

get a Ruger Mark III it looks like a cute lil german luger they are a hoot to shoot!
I have two, and I love shooting them. I'm more accurate with my mkIII 5.5" bull barrel I've been making into a race gun for a while than I am with anything else I've ever shot.
But for CC? Are you nuts?
Israeli Mossad used Beretta 70/71 correct?
Assassinations and defensive CC are very different things, I really don't think what the Mossad uses is applicable to CC.

The OP has long departed to the real world, hopefully better armed and becoming confident in the concept of CC. Hopefully he will never need to figure out exactly how the .22 really performs under stress or against a larger caliber.
s2mason, if you ever bother coming back and reading the trainwreck of a thread you started, I hope you move up to a centerfire CC choice once you realize that nobody has noticed your .22, and nobody is likely to notice a slightly larger and easier to shoot pistol either.

I know it a auto fourm but as far as small .22lr goes they don't seem to work well in small auto at least not for me. I have a NAA .22lr that I use to carry as primary when buying dope and did not want to be caught with a gun. I will admit it was more for a feeling of being able to defend myself then thinking it was the best for the job. Of course there were some pretty well armed back up close by in case things went south. when I left dope and went to felony warrants I carry it as a back up, now days it goes in my short pockect when I'm working in the yard or running to the store I feel it will do the job in most cases remember most of the punks that try to mug are looking for easy marks even a shot or two from one of these will make most of the goblins of the world remember they need to be somewhere eles and try to get away.

be safe

Ballistics and behind-the-lines exploits aside, how easy is it to manipulate one of those mini revolvers under stress?

There's a hilarious move called "Kiss-Kiss Bang-Bang" with Robert Downey Junior and Val Kilmer and in one scene Kilmer shoots a bad guy in rapid succession with a mini revolver stashed in his pants. In the outtakes, it takes Kilmer maybe 10 seconds to get the gun ready to fire the first shot and he can't even cock it for the second.

When I was the chief firearms instructor for my department I had several deputies try qualifying with mini revolvers as their off duty weapon. None ever succeeded, largely because of the difficulty in manipulating the tiny things with any speed or accuracy. Sorry but they are a joke unless someone sticks it in your ear.
