I already own these but would like something new:
.22
.17HMR
.204 Ruger
.270 Win.
.30-06 Springfield
.300 Win. Mag.
.308 will be here in October T/C Icon
AR-15 will be here in September also
.17 Fireball will be here in October

I have a new 2.5-10x42mm scope and now want a rifle to put it on, I was thinking .243 for a new caliber???

until you have shot the pure fun , yet almost recoilless 17m2, you dont know what you are missing, for centerfire , I would suggest either the 17mach4, now called the 17fireball, or a nice 6mm or something fast, in a 6.5, maybe a 260 remington. 6mm is much faster than a 243, with more natural accuracy , and better bbl life. The key is the super long neck on the cartridge.

Edit: Oooops! Just realized the OP wants to mount a scope - oh well - the below is a fun selection regardless...

A lever gun in .45LC, .44Mag or .357Mag would be a fun choice. Marlin makes a number of lever guns ranging in style from Cowboy to a lever gun that takes advantage of modern technologies. I'm partial to a Win 94 myself but they're not being made any more.

If you're into really big stuff then a 45-70 might suit ya and for a real hoot load your own with Black Powder and all lead bullets (well maybe 5% tin).

Just throwing out some ideas.

.243 as you mentioned. (this would be my choice)
.223 (I would go with a CZ 527)
45-70 either a lever gun or ruger #1 single shot
30-30 lever gun.

I think you are on the right track looking at a .243 for what its worth.

Note his locale is Canada.

So much for any idea of an AR-15

Actually we can own AR-15`s mine is on order and will be here in late September:p

Thanks for all the great help. I do not think I want a big boomer. The .243 is sounding like a winner, but what platform:confused:

Nice one, Thad, I thorough range report is called for, and get as much facoty ammo as you can to try. Right now, I think just remmy makes it, but hornady may, and you can certainly get a hold of cooper arms, to find out where they get theirs, and also their is Calhoun rifles, I think they load some.

If I lived in Canada, I'd get something restricted to the oppressed Americans, like a STG-44 or MP-40, maybe a CZ-58.

If I had $400 or so, maybe a M-14? :)

Assuming you want something for hunting, you might consider a Ruger bolt action. I understand they are available in .243. The stainless version would be appropriate for the Northwest, if you don't mind the shiny look. Ruger has supposedly improved the trigger...

I agree that you need a lever action. How about a .45-70? A .444? Hell, even a .30-30. I just got a .454.

.45-70 in single shot.

.375H&H, .416 Rigby or .458 Lott for safari gun. There are some kewl tungsten bullets.

Lever action, new .308, or .45Colt or .44Mag.
