HI All,

I was wondering if its legal to put a carbine butstock on a super 14 contender in .22lr? I purchased it as a pistol originally, and I dont want to buy another barrel for it in .22lr.

Does anyone know if this would be an short barreled rifle ?

How do you get permission to have an SBR is it possible on a single shot .22lr contender with a 14" barrel?

Thanks

It is my understanding that it is normally not legal to have a shoulder stocked firearm with a barrel of less than 16 inches. There is probably an exception to this, if you want to pay the tax and license the firearm with the BATF. But I'd bet it's a lot less expensive to buy a replacement barrel for your Contender than it is to jump through BATF's hoops ... and I'm sure it's less expensive to buy a rifle barrel than to get caught with an illegal SBR! You need to check your state and local laws in addition to the federal regs, as well.

You can have a gunsmith permanently install an extention that would make the barrel over 16" in length. You could also pay the tax and have it registered as an SBR. It'd be cheaper and less hassle to just go out and buy a 16" barrel or a 'carbine kit' which I think TC was selling a few years ago, don't know about now though.
