So today just happend to be the once in a blue moon that myself, my girlfriend and my best friend and his wife all had the same day off. This rarely happens so we decided it was an omen for a range day. My GF just bought her first gun a Rossi .410/.22lr combo from dicks. So we wanted to take that out, in addition my first hunting season is coming up so I wanted to make sure my mosin m44 was ready to roll.
We took along a total of 4 22lr rifles my M&P .40 and my M44 plus the .410 part of the combo.
Here is what we learned,
1. My GF still does not like my .40S&W just too much for her at the moment
2. The el cheapo slip on recoil pad did WONDERS for my mosin it is not a great gun to shoot and I still have a shoulder left
3. We all had a TON of fun with the .22lr's we went through more than 500rnds
4.Bowling pins are still the greatest targets out there
5. Phone books will not stop a 7.62x54R round
6. The first minor downside is that while my GF LOVES her new gun and had a ton of fun with it she is not ready to handle the .410 round, she shot it a few times and decided it was just too much. I shot the .410 as well and I have to agree the recoil was stiff. I am sure this is due to the short, light gun with no recoil system. However I would strongly reccomend the Rossi for beginners or youth.
7. Now the odd situation, we went out the Wildcat mountain a place that we have shot several times before and we love, we have a special spot that has great backstops followed up by heavy timber and its just an all around good spot. We were shooting away for about 90min when while we were all reloading a man with no shirt on and carring a 5gallon bucket of berries came walking out FROM BEHIND OUT "BACKSTOP" he very casually said "took me a while to figure out which way you were shooting" he did not seem upset or angry at us however I was very suprised to have him walk out, I was just about to start up with my .40s&w again when he walked out and I yelled cease fire. Even though we chose a safe and sane spot to shoot had a stray round hit him of course we would have been in a would of hurt in additon to him being in a serious medical condition. I dont see an easy way to prevent this, walked the shooting area before we even unloaded our gear we always shot in the same direction and did all of the other basics to shooting on public land.
