Super BlackHawk from 74, anything to know about ahead of time?

Here it is. I dont have my permit yet so its just on loan so i can see how i like shooting it, if its more than i can handle comfortably i can still give it back. I have to say tho it feels good in my hand.
I also tried removing one leg of the spring trigger feel didnt change but the pull weight droped from 4.75 to 2.75. If i keep the gun ill probably get a spring kit and do some polishing, but the guns tight and realy nice.

You should tell pretty quick if the Hogue grip is for you. I put them on my current Blackhawk for Ruger only loads because my first Blackhawk was in .41mag with wood grips and I never really enjoyed shooting it.

So far i like the way they feel in my hand, well see about recoil today i still gotta stop by the store and get some .44 specials but the gun came with an old box of winchester 240grn mags.

That was about the same as our experiences with the Super Blackhawk trigger pull weight back when my wife was shooting IHMSA with them. The reason she removed one leg of the trigger return spring instead of just installing any aftermarket trigger parts was because the IHMSA competitor's handguns were inspected before each match. And aftermarket trigger parts in the "Production Revolver Class" were against the rules. For that matter, so was removing one leg of the trigger return spring. But as I said, removing it could be done discreetly after the "Production Revolver" had already passed inspection.:)
By the way - my wife fired over ten thousand rounds in her two Super Blackhawks in practice and competition with one leg of the trigger return springs off its post. She never had the removed leg get tangled with the hammer spring. Not saying it can't happen. Just saying in over ten thousand rounds my wife never experienced it. But then again, if I've heard it once, I've heard it a hundred times about those Super Blackhawk, square-backed trigger guards hammering someone's middle finger. Neither my wife nor I have ever experienced that either.:)

Not quite the same. Since you mentioned "Ruger only loads," I'm guessing you're talking about a regular Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt - the same size as a regular Ruger Blackhawk .41 Magnum. Ruger Super Blackhawks are larger, with larger, and longer grip frames. I can get all three of my fingers on a Super Blackhawk's grip, but I can only get two of my fingers on my .45 Colt Blackhawk's grip - my pinky finger has to go underneath.
You're right though about "Ruger Only" loads kicking hard using regular Blackhawk factory grips.. A few weeks ago I fired 6, 300gr +P CORBON loads in my .45 Colt Blackhawk with its factory grips. My right wrist has almost fully recovered now.:D

I bought my 3-screw new way, way back and still have it and it still looks pristine. I do like the Supers. I use to hunt deer with mine back when My eyes were better and I didn't shake so much. I really like H110/296 behind a 200 grain JHP. The 200 grn bullet is a real deer killer and gives more uniform velocities than the 240 JHP. The 240 bullet is a superb performer in my Marlin 94 ,44mag. And as usual, I prefer 2400 with cast bullets in the Super.

.308 Norma, I do know what you are speaking of in regards to IHMSA, I used to shoot my .44Mag SBH and did really well, then got disqualified because I simply jeweled the hammer and the trigger, no other alterations to the gun, and they wouldn't let me shoot production anymore. Needless to say that was my last competition shoot using my Ruger .44Mag. Got a Model 29 S&W and shot even better with the 8 3/8" over the 7.5". Still have both firearms though.

Yeah, my wife started with an old 6.5" .357 Blackhawk of mine. She didn't do real well, and when she failed to tip over 3 rams that she'd dead centered in one match, she made me buy her a "bigger gun" - a 10.5" Super Silhouette, which improved her scores considerably. She ended up with two of them eventually, as she didn't want to be without when one or the other was back to Ruger for a tune-up.
I'm more of an "equipment junky." So I elected to shoot "Unlimited Class" with a 14" 7mm IHMSA that I built myself from an XP-100 kit. I still have it, but we only participated in IHMSA for about 6 months after I started. It got too expensive for us in terms of time and money - especially considering that we had a large mortgage and two young daughters at home. I'd come home from work, load ammo every night, my wife would go down to the gravel pit and shoot it up the next day while I was at work and the girls were at school, then come Saturday morning, we head for Idaho Falls, or Twin Falls, or Boise, or maybe down to Salt Lake for a match. IHMSA became a job, rather than a sport for us. So we quit. And that's the main reason we've never gotten into Cowboy Action shooting or Black Powder Rendezvous shooting. We know how we are - competitive.:)

Ill try some 200s, im not buying reloading stuff untill the guns officially mine, but I WILL be reloading for it. Ammos about 1.50 a shot here, only round i shoot more expensive (that i can get ammo for) is my stw at 4 bucks a shot.....

It also came with a weaver scope mount and a bushnell trophy scope. The scope, which again as long as i keep it, will probably go on my 7-30 contender. The mount tho i may toss on and try one of my small red dots.

Got out and shot if for a while this morning. No issues, sights about a foot low for me.
I shot a box of .44 Specials before breaking out the old winchester mags, that was super pleasant, ill probably do that alot.
The Magnums were actually really comfortable as well, once i convinced myself the gun wouldnt run away if i lossened my grip from how i hold my .45 super.

Infact the heavier blackhawk didnt hurt, where as the new loads im running thru my super with a 230 at 1250 stung like a....er...stung...even with the heavy recoil spring, and compensator.

I do want a lighter trigger pull i think. Gonna try the spring trick next time, i forgot today.

Glad to hear its working for you Loonwulf, a super blackhawk is a joy to shoot. Reloading 44 is why i started reloading again, it is a HUGE money saver for 44 mag!

Sounds like everything is going well with your new Super Blackhawk! I found an old ad for Mustang Grips (unfortunately long out of business), that are very much like a pair of grips a friend of mine had for his Super Blackhawk. Made a world of difference when shooting full house loads through that gun. Might be able to find a pair like that on ebay or on one of the gun auction sites.

Thanks, ill keep an eye out. Ive seen something similar, but the fill behind the trigger guard came all the way down back of the guard. Price was steeper than i wanna pay too, but i DID like the looks.
