Suppressors/Silencers

Ever try keeping hearing protection on a kids head at a boys scout or summer camp situation? Very difficult, it will save the innocent kids ears, I have heard in a couple countries its ILLEGAL to have a minor fire a gun without a suppresor.

I know many farmers that use motion sensors to wake up when there are deer in their field, a night vision scope and suppresor to shoot the deer (not in MI where its illegal) so as not to disturb the neighbors, but those are integrated in deer rifles.

Also for reducing recoil works better than any and every flash hider I've ever used. Had a friend get threated by the ATF for making a buffer suppressor with no rings after it, because it was an internal system they said it was a suppressor, it was set up to be 139 decibals, so he thought he'd be fine, they said give it to us or go to jail... it helped with noise and kick on his .308

Also, what is the legal status of Suppressors, and why do some get offended whe they are referred to as Silencers?

They are legal in most states, but require a $200 tax, a very in-depth 3-6 month background check and registration with the ATF. You can also build your own, but you have to go through basically the same process. The local head LEO (chief, sheriff, etc.) has to approve it as well, but you can get around that in some locations by creating a corporation or a living trust or something like that (extra paperwork, not the kind of thing thugs are going to be going through), but you still have to go through the very in-depth background check and pay the $200 tax, plus it is still registered. Also, unlike a C&R license, the $200 tax is per suppressor, so every time you get a new one, that's another $200 and another really long background investigation.

These aren't the kind of things that street punks and such would easily get ahold of legally, because of the background check and cost.

As for why people get offended by the word "silencers", it's the same reason that we are upset by the term "assault rifles". These are words that the media uses to try to make them sound "evil". They are also incorrect terms. "Assault rifle" is by definition a select-fire rifle, and our rifles are not select-fire (fully automatic)*. Similarly, the term "Silencer" is also misleading, because suppressors only decrease the sound of the shot, but the shot is still quite loud. A suppressor brings the shot to a safe sound level and changes the sound so that it sounds like something other than a gunshot. It is nothing like the movies. Even a 22lr pistol will still sound like a nail gun or a loud CO2 pistol. With subsonic ammo, these can be a little quieter, but they are still not like they are in the movies.

"Silencer" is a term that is used by the media to portray suppressors as something that they are not, to make the story sound more intense.

*some of us do own select-fire rifles, but those go through the same process as a suppressor. registration, 3-6 month background investigation, and $200 tax to the ATF. They are also outragiously expensive to purchase, with the lowest prices I've seen for a "machinegun" being about $5000, and even then we're talking about cheap Mac 10s. An M4 or an M16 would cost more than a new car. Also, like suppressors, select-fire weapons are not legal in all states.

No background check for a LLC or trust

If you apply for a suppressor using a LLC or Trust you do not need approval by local law enforcement nor is there any background check (how do you do a background check on a company?). Granted there is still the $200 tax to pay per suppressor.

The biggest advantage to having the suppressor 'owned' by a LLC or trust is that who ever is listed on those has the ability to be possession of the suppressor. This allows more than one person to take it out to a range or other location to shoot.

My son formed a LLC to buy his suppressor. I am one of the people in the LLC so I can also take it to the range and use it. Now I get the opportunity to shoot his ammo up. Seems only fair after so many years of him shooting my ammo.

I shot a Surgeon bolt gun in .308 with a surefire suppressor on it

i spent a good bit of the day shopping for one of those. i really, really want one
