40 lashes for me
I've been keeping my XD in the truck during this Michigan winter and honestly the correct phrase for it is neglect. Now there's some fine surface rust on the slide. Suggestions for cleaning it up?

very fine steel wool.. this will remove the rust without effecting the actual finish if the gun.. I am not sure the Number associated with the steel wool, but as fine as you can get.. then use it and some good quality gun oil, and the surface rust will come right off.. then I would suggest not leaving it in your trunk...:neener:

0000 steel wool is the finest I think. Some ppl use it to polish oxidized glass and metal. Just make sure you keep it well lubed when you are polishing and dont rub too hard. Just cause its "fine" doesnt mean its not abrasive.

I had that on my XD9. CLP and some elbow grease took care of it. Very fine steel wool works too, but as noted, use some CLP or gun oil too.

The XD line has had some improvements over the years, including the finish. The earlier finish was kinda thin and not as rust resistant as one would expect. They have since changed thier finish and is similar to what glock uses.

I have one of the earlier finishes on my gun. It has been known to develop a fine patina of rust if not wiped down periodically. Disappointing actually. It has been reliable though, so it still has a home.

Thanks folks,
I have some 0000 steel wool around here and I'll go at it gently with plenty of oil this weekend.

.... and thanks Timradcliffe, when I have a glock question I'll know where to go with it.
