UNION CITY, Ga. -- A 75-year-old Union City homeowner said a frightening break-in started when someone rang his doorbell. Then, the homeowner said, there was a noise at his back window.

“So I went upstairs and got my pistol and came back down,” said the homeowner who didn’t want to be identified.

The homeowner said he walked to the room where he heard the noise, got on the floor, and opened the door slightly. The homeowner said he saw someone crawling through the window.

“I’m within 8 feet of the guy. I’m nervous. I yelled at him and it seemed like his hand went up so I hit the floor and I started shooting,” said the homeowner.

The homeowner said he fired at least three rounds. Police said one bullet hit the 17-year-old suspect in the leg and the other in the groin area.

Police said the teen suspect ran up the street and eventually fell in the front yard of another home.

“I regret that it caused injury on him, but I also regret that someone was trying to impose injury and steal my personal values,” said the homeowner.

The homeowner said he purchased the house three months ago and this was the second time someone tried to break in.

Police said that so far the homeowner has not been charged and they will leave that decision up to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities said the teen was being treated at Grady Hospital and faces criminal charges.
 
They seem to make a big deal out of the fact this criminal was a teen. Are people supposed to feel bad for him?

Of course they are! He was just a misguided youth trying to share his newly learned values of wealth redistribution with this obviously crazy old man. After all the child was unarmed while this crazy gun toting man was running around with a pistol in his own home like it was the wild west! We need to pass stricter gun control laws to keep such gun nuts from harming our innocent children. After all, it's for the children.

And now ends our trip through the Brady Zone.
 
I support the guy 100%, and I think it shouldn't even be up for discussion by the DA. However, as reported in this article:

Some DA could stretch this to say the homeowner was scared, and not in control of his faculties, was too scared or nervous to be carrying a gun, had a flashback to his military service, used the "spray and pray" technique, and maybe the the kid's hand went up because he was surrendering.

Do what you want, but IMO, NEVER talk to the media. You have nothing to gain, and everything to loose. They, like the police, will cherry-pick your statements to fit their agenda. Unless they give you 100% final edit rights to the story, which they never will, they could make you sound like a real wacko. Your only statements to the media should be "no comment", and "please leave my property now". If necessary, the next thing they should hear you say is: "officer, please escort these trespassers off my property immediately, then I want to file trespassing charges against them."
 
Punk enters window of someone else's home and was not invited or has permission to do so with the intent of burglary? Home owner shoots teen burglar in the groin.

Well case closed, for justified response. Home owner said he felt threaten. This is an open and shut case. :cool:

Hello! No where does it even remotely intimate it is for you, same for the media... Old man shoots child! Child in Hospital (aged 17 charged with...)
Take from that piece of information what you will.

There was most likely more than one kid on that outing, the rest where in the wind on the first shot! Different story if they had got in the house, and no gun in the gentleman's hand.

Why "No charges yet" crap, in Law the only real place to shoot someone is in the act of coming in, outside, or inside, they are trespassing, half way in? they are breaking in! at night, burglary.

The only seat the Home Owner will occupy in court will be as a witness!

"You are charged with being a poor shot, sentence, Night Sights and mandatory training (ammo supplied) case closed.
 
The elderly are being targeted more and more by 'young criminals'. Not too long ago a young carjacker in NJ pulled an elderly gentleman from his car and he died of a heart attack.

I would love to see a message crafted by the AARP or another senior group that advises seniors to get firearms training and arm themselves, citing stories like this and many others I see from time to time.
 
The elderly home owner should get a big ol "that a boy" award. Night, under stress, 2 out of 3 shots hit the target, alot better hit ratio that most police shootings that we hear about.

If, If, this gentleman should have charges pressed against him, I hope that there would be a defence fund set up. I would give to it.

Defending a good shoot can often be very expensive. We all need to stick together and help oneanother. It may be you or I in the future.

NEVER say, "I regret..." or "I'm sorry that...". That's nearly an admission of guilt there. It implies that you did something wrong.

Good question.

Even in theoretical discussions here a number of people seem inclined to view "a neighborhood kid" who was "just looking for beer/a little money for a joint/..." as somehow different than a "real" criminal.

I'm old-fashioned. I figure that any mentally sound person (and many who are not entirely covered by that description, such as a co-worker I once had who had Down's Syndrome but who was exceedingly clear on issues of fairness vs. unfairness, justice vs injustice, and right vs wrong), who has attained "the age of reason" (traditionally somewhere between 5 and 8), knows perfectly well that breaking into someone's house is wrong.

A teen who has CHOSEN to do wrong has CHOSEN to bear the full responsibility and consequences of that decision.

If that includes getting shot by his/her intended prey so be it. A yearling lion may not be a very effective predator yet, but he is still a predator.

two things i find wrong about this.

1. where they are not too sure if they will file charges on the homeowner its up to the DA.


2. The way society is today. The teens, parents can sue the bjesus out of the homeowner. Which is so bogus when suspects can sue the victims.
 
Who gives a damn if he's a teen? You want to act like an adult, and commit adult sized crimes? You're going to be charged as an adult, and dealt with as an adult by whoever you were trying to take advantage of. Can anyone here look at a kid and definitively say, He's 18, not 17. Or he's 17, not 18? Hell no. Not when he's breaking into your house. I'm not going to say he should or should not have shot, but he sounds like he did the okay thing to me. Reiterate, Act like an adult, get treated like an adult. Works in all aspects of life, including crime.
 
wow what a shocker!!

an unknown person gets shot inside a house, that he should'nt be in ,in the first place,because the homeownerfears for his life....h'mmm let me think,oh yeah,at least thats what will be described if someone breaks into my house.....poor guy? no poor homeowner he 's the innocent victom here....

Yeah. It looks like they are trying to put the usual "spin" on it.

Next thing you know, it will turn out the kid suffers from COOKIE addiction, and was only trying to safisfy an honest craving.

I need more details. What was the caliber? What is this man's address? I would like to send him a case of bullets, some full size silhouette targets with kill zones mapped and a handful of passes to his local range. Way to go Grandpa, next time, aim higher and save the county some hospital and court bills.

This senior was targeted for invasion because he was elderly, the punk knew EXACTLY what he was doing and had no fear of an old man. Surprise! Too bad the local news is so biased. Just tell it like it is. The public is tired of the liberal crap in the news that makes this look like the homeowner is the bad guy.
 
Can I just say it is refreshing to read a story here on THR and be 20+ posts in and not have to read one of our esteemed members doing their MMQB routine.

-I haven't had to read how the guy should have never let the guy into his house in the first place.

-I haven't had to read how he should have had 1 or several dogs to deal with the threat.

-I haven't had to read he should have had a tac light and illuminated the guy and then held him for the police.

-I haven't had to read how he should have better identified his target and what was behind him.

-I haven't had to read that he should have waited in a different part of the house, while on the phone with 911 to "LET THE COPS HANDLE IT".

-I haven't had to read the other usual posts about his lack of training, situational awareness, or judgement. I for one am grateful.

Well done old timer. Keep up the good work.
