Is it possible to swap out the barrel and tube of a 20-inch Mossberg 590A1 for an 18.5 inch barrel and shorter tube? That inch and a half may not seem like much but having fire the two, it makes a difference.

hope this doesnt come across rude i dont mean it that way, but have you asked the manufacturer? if not i would recommend it to be sure.
anyway, after a bit o research, i do not believe that the 20" barrel can be swapped for a shorter one very simply due to the longer mag tube. someone feel free to correct me if im wrong, i will be the first to admit it

Yes, you can use an 18.5 inch barrel if you replace the extended mag tube with the standard length one.

Both screw into the end of the mag tube, the 20" on the 590 has the attachment point near the muzzle end of the barrel. The 18.5" has it about halfway down the barrel, but it's still the same attachment method. Using an 18.5" barrel with the 590's stock mag tube would NOT work as the tube would be to long. Swapping the mag tube out for a shorter tube allows the 18.5" to mount just fine. A standard magazine tube from most of the rest of the 500 series family will take care of the issue.

good to know, thanks for the correction.
i am not terribly familiar with modern shotguns, but i dont mind learning.

Not sure, but you MAY want to put in the 18.5" sized magazine spring, too. My brain is a bit 'fuzzy' this morning, about 2 gallons short on coffee.

The replacement magazine tube, should come with the spring. If it doesn't it probably wont hurt anything to use the longer spring from the higher capacity tube, but you might find it's a bit of a pain to load it.
