Given similar weights and velocity, which is a better personal protection bullet?

What caliber are we talking about? How long of a barrel? What bullet weights? Honestly, place your shots accurately and either should get the job done.

Out of the choices you presented, I'd go with gold dots. My personal ammo preference for self defense situations involving urban predators is Corbon DPX.

    Probably the GDHP. Probably.

The SWCHP has a much narrower range of velocities in which it will perform ideally.

More information would be useful. Caliber, actual velocity, platform, etc.

I'm assuming you're talking about a 38spl. I'd say either choice would serve you well.

    Hi,
You did not indicate the barrel length. I assume your talking about a 38 special. The LSWCHP 158 gr 38+P to me works best out of a 4 inch barrel 38 special. Velocities are going to be 800 to 900 fps. The only exception to this is the Buffalo Bore +P round which is advertise at 1100 fps. I think the Speer gold dots will work better with the shorter barrels. I don't have any experience with the Speers. For myself I have Buffalo Bore LSWCHP 158gr 38+Ps loaded in my S&W model 10 4 inch heavy barrel for self defense. Any yes I still carry the police service revolver.
    Regards,
    Howard

For .38spl, the 135gr. GDHP for a lightweight snub. For steel and/or longer barrels I prefer the 158gr. SWCHP+P.

158 gr. Lead SWCHP +P. My money buys Buffalo Bore for both my J & K frames.

    Yes.

    Both will work.

There is no better/best here. What do you want it to accomplish, at what velocity? Pick the one that does that.

Gold Dots, in my experience, are very consistently accurate bullets.

SWC are much less expensive. Practice with cheap bulk SWC loaded to your defense load's velocity, and carry SWCHP, is an economical practice that doesn't short-change you.

I don't think the whole "personal protection bullet" thing works for me anymore.
Find a bullet that you get bored shooting because you can shoot it that constantly and use it.

Gold Dots are VERY good. I still prefer a heavy cast SWC with a big flat nose like a Freightliner for most uses though.

Speer is really slipping on quality control lately, based on the bullets I've been loading.

The Buffalo Bore FBI load is what I carry.
