Swede M96 Countered bored

I was looking at buying a Swede M96 today at a gun shop and noticed it was countered-bored about 1/4 inch from the muzzle end. I have seen mosins countered-bored before, but no Swedes. My question is, did the swedes counter-bore their rifles or was this probably done my a owner of the gun? This was the hold back of buying the gun.

Are you sure it was counterbored? Try to see if it's just a thread protector on the muzzle end. Some M96s have a threaded barrel (M96b) which were meant for a blank firing adapter. There is a little sleeve you thread on in normal use and it could make it look like it is counterbored.

There wasn't a adapter on the muzzle, I had looked at threaded barrel M96 earlier, but decided against buying the threaded muzzle. The barrel is counteredbored, the same as a mosin. I just haven't seen a swede counteredbored.

I seriously doubt the Swedes did it. They were painstaking in the care of their firearms, bordering on obsessive.

If a barrel were irreparably damaged at the muzzle, I can't imagine a Swedish armorer taking any approach besides rebarrelling.

At any rate, I have never heard of a counterbored Swede before your post.

Why'd you pass on a threaded muzzle?

My 96's barrel is not counterbored. Probably done later. As for not wanting the crew top barrel Swedes, I cannot blame you. Who wants that ugly thing on the end of their rifle's barrel?

PS I love my Swede. It's as accurate as your typical sporting rifle off the shelf today.

I saw a really nice M96 at Reds Indoor Range in Austin that had some custom features added. It was drilled and tapped for a scope, plus the bolt handle was turned down by cut and weld, and the mag follower had an angle milled out of it so the bolt could be closed without depressing the follower. Man I want that rifle!! They are getting so hard to find anymore. Oh well, some lucky guy will beat me to it.

Truthfully

that probably makes the gun worth less. It would be a good shooter though.
