I've seen them on AR-platform rifles... not just in hollywood but some of those pimp-my-AR magazines out there.

It seems to mount right under the front sight block, my memory tries to tell me it might connect to the bayonet lug but i'm not sure (highly unlikely).

I'd love to put a light on there without blowing $100 for a quad-rail carbine handguard. So I bet theres some nifty mounts/lights out there online, I just havent seen them.

And I'm suuuure one of you all knows exactly what i'm talking about.
All links welcome, Thanks!

wow... $343... haha yea, thats a bit high.

What I'm thinking of doesnt stick off to the side, its more concentrated under the barrel, tucked fairly close to it.

AR15/M16 BAYONET PICATINNY RAIL MOUNT ADAPTER
Finally, a convenient way to mount lights and accessories to your AR-15 bayonet lug! The CNC machined block secures to the lug with two set screws, letting you attach Streamlight M3/M6 tactical lights, Weaver rings, etc. without having to attach to the barrel preserving your rifles accuracy.

I've got an Insight M6X mounted on an adapter which fits on my bayonet mount. I bought it from Botach Tactical, and it was listed as an ITI mount (I assume ITI stands for Insight Technologies?) but think it was made by someone else (not Insight). I can't find it at Botach, but they have a dovetail mount that looks awfully close. I don't suppose it would work? http://www.botachtactical.com/gggm3mounfor.html
It looks like the mount for the bayonet lug is a "dovetail", but I don't remember 'em listing it that way (they specifically said for bayonet lug when I bought mine).
Yanked the light off mine but there is no name on the adapter, just a logo which doesn't tell me anything!

My setup looks like this guy's:

EDITED: Just found this at Botach Tactical-looks like what you're after! Guess they changed brands since I bought mine:

Also check out the 2 at the bottom of the page.
BTW...I've bought quite a bit of stuff from Botach and have had no problems with 'em.

What about a direct barrel mount? I have a laser and/or a flashlight I might want to mount to an AR barrel, so both ends would be a little smaller than 1". Does anyone make a mount like that - like 2 rings butt to butt?

Works for me!

Years ago I had a light that was a combination weapons light and VFG Similar to the Surefire M900 but attached to the bayonet lug rather than on a rail. I sold it and haven't seen one since but I do remember that it was made by Wilcox. I think it was called the Nightstalker or something like that.

Try Fulton Armory http://www.fulton-armory.com/ they sell bayonet lug mounts as well as handguard mounts for white-light systems.

Stay away from any system taht mounts directly onto the barrel, this is a great way for you to mess-up the barrel.

Tac Star makes a nice barrel mount and a tail cap switch that works with certain Surefire flashlights. I used this etup on my Bushmaster for a while, but then found that the tailcap switch cord would get hung up on my belt and tac vest. I then switched to railed handguards, Viking Tactics light mount and the Surefire G2 light. The light mount is offset and I can use my thumb to operate the tailcap switch on the light. I personally find this to be better than a barrel mount, but if you have no other choice, check out Tac Star.

ETA: Here is a pic of my old Tac Star setup. Hope you can make it out.

Sotech Universal Light Buckle - a nylon strap that works with any handguard and costs about $13. The only problem is finding a place that still sells it.
