Who else is sick of all the "tactical" garbage associated with guns and shooting? Tactical sights, tactical load bearing vests, tactical reloads, tactical finishes, tactical stance, tactical grips or stocks, tactical scopes and ON AND ON AND ON!!!! Where did common sense leave and "tactical" take over? Did I miss it completely? What is next? A tactical mess kit for when SHTF? (another rant could start there, but I digress) Black tactical polymer plate and utensils held in a black tactical mess bag of super tactical nylon? With infared tactical super illuminating heating elements for the tactical warming of meals? Stinks of mall ninja gunshop commando that has not been there or done any of that to me.

I can absolutely see using the right tool for the right job, but does it have to be tactical? All you see anymore is "tactical" everything. Does anyone shoot an AR or a defensive shotgun anymore without a scope, light, laser, ammo attached, super sling and bipod anymore? Some of the guns are straight out of hollyweird.

I guess it would help if the "tactical" guys I see at the range could actually shoot. Most are miserable shots, either spraying lead all over or bench jockeys that could not hit their own butts with an unflolded road map offhand or even kneeling. Very poor practice regimens are not part of tactical training are they? To be honest the "tactical mindset" that most of them have told me about makes me a tad nervous too.

Where did I miss the boat? I do admit some of the toys these guys drag out are pretty cool, but I just don't get it. Lest you think I am some sort of old fuddy-duddy (apologies to the fuddy-duddies;) ) I am under 35 years old, veteran, shot my whole life, and have been very close to law enforcement for years and years.

OK, rant off. What do you think? Comments?

Take a couple of valiums & take a seat next to the Mad Ogre. He beat cha to that rant.

Seems appropriate to me.

"Tactical" has become a marketing term, and unfortunately this has muddied the water in terms of defining good tactics and equipment for defensive situations.

I recall a deputy in our county who carried a 1911 as his sidearm. He also had a shotgun in his rig, a 12 gauge SXS, and the rifle he usually had was a Ruger #1 in 22-250. He was also one of the best woodsmen in the area, and although none of his gear was black or "tactical", everyone knew they shouldn't mess with him.

Had "tactical" camouflage minimag light once. Dropped it hunting at dusk and couldn't find it. Got me nice bright red non-tactical one now. Drop it, see it, pick it back up...

I think in defiance of the "evil black tactical rifle", I'll build an AR on a yellow Cav Arms lower.

Slide over HSMITH,Mad Ogre, another one here a bit tired of the term for everything. I appreciate igenuity and skill, its the person with a tool, preferebly the right tool--not a marketing tool. IMO

Someone post the link to those "high fashion" polka dot and pink, etc firearms. That was pretty funny.

I was wondering, If I buy a "banned" AR-15 & paint it pink will it no longer be an evil assault rifle? After all, it's all about looks isn't it?

HSMITH, did I tell you I just got a Kimber Pro-Tactical 45? Fits nice in my Tactical Elite holster. Almost forgot to mention my Turbo Tactical mags!

No seriously, once I bought my Extreme Pro Tactical running shoes, I had to have something that matched.:) :D

Hmmm...just about anything could be called "Tactical" these days I guess...

I'm sure someone has drawn the analogy before, but my new girlfriend got a little wisp of a garment from Victoria's Secret the other day that fits many of the criteria of "Tactical":

1) It's expensive
2) It's black.
3) It's used primarily at night.
4) It's lightweight.
5) It's snag-free.
6) She can get out of it with one hand.
7) It's easily concealed.
8) It definitely doesn't restrict her movement.
9) It's dangerous because when I saw her in it my head almost
exploded.
10) It would stop a 200 lb man in his tracks.

"Tactical"?

TACTICAL!!! :what:

As far as liking the term "Tactical" on items. I can live with it if it's got use for it. Like these for instance.

They're totally tactical! No one sees them when I have them on so they're totally stealthy too! :D Except the one time I walked around with them exposed and was printing big time. I got in some trouble that time......but that's another story :D

I'm just wondering where I gotta put the kevlar plates though??? :D

Nuke Wesley for the ratings!

:D

& Edward. Have my Best Hunting Bud who lost his camo flashlight - problem was = wasn't dark, wasn't on = lost it forever. We know where it was lost - within maybe 20 yards. Problem is = It's tactical, & it's lost forever. Really does work for me.

Tactical is rediculous & used as a marketig tool now-a-days.

Used to mean - mere 5 years ago - as a method, a way - not as a marketing term.

Know some who are so much more tactical with a bare-bones semi-.22 auto/revolver (GG! with a wrist-rocket) than anything now known as a .308-clad, bolt, supressed "sniper-guy."

Do doubt toys are col enough, but toys don't make anything.

Huh. I'd dare-say, tactics do.

When I see the word "Tactical", I think of the book by David Kiersey on personality styles.

His work is another (very well developed) take on Carl Jungs temperments which went all the way back to... Plato? Hmm.

Anyway, he says that there are 4 main intelligences and that everyone has a primary, two auxiliary and a tertiary (read: weak)

Diplomatic Strategic
Logistical Tactical

What ever your primary intel (the one you are most comfy with), the one catty corner is your weakest, and the adjacent two are your middle ground.

Kiersey defines "Tactical" as "The art of improving your position". Which I really like. In the abstract, my Wife is more tactical than I am as a general rule.

Ok, wayyyy OT...

I think that the "tactical" stuff is going to be more and more recognized as the choice of wannabe's and losers.

I mean really. Anyone that knows anything and see someone in that gear - its hard not to laugh. Unless you are doing a dynamic entry with the next 5 minutes, you look ridiculous.

I can deal with tactical black although it gives me an occasional chuckle. What I don't get is folks who wanna wear camo. Today I am going to a big gun show. I have no doubt that among the hundreds of folks I'll rub shoulders with, there will be a certain percentage in camo. Duh! Mossy oak does not hide you inside a concrete and steel building! :p It also doesn't do so great outside during Indiana's winters when the world turns white.

Last summer I took two teenagers to Hunter Safety Education Classes as required for them to get their first hunting license in this state. I told them before we went, that there would be about 50 people in the class and at least 5 of them would be in camo. I missed by 1. The boys were amazed at their father's crystal ball like abilities.

I've hunted my entire life and have never owned camo. I can't say my game bag has been the emptier for it.

Camo Schamo.

Tactical?

Obviously mostly marketing BS intended to hook the more gullible (young) guys. I could dip myself in flat black paint and hide in a coal mine at midnight and a vision-impaired senior citizen could find me. That's the disadvantage of being middle aged and overweight! Still, I have a *tactical* AR-15 set-up which is a hell of a lot of fun to play around with. To each his own.
