I'm curious to see what measures people take to ensure that they can spring into action quickly if something were to happen in their homes while sleeping.

There are alot of issues to consider when you think about how quickly (or slowly) you might get into action from a dead sleep at 3am.

what are you wearing (if anything)?
can you find your glasses, gun, pepper spray, flashlight, shoes, clothes in the dark?
Are you alert enough to make any important life or death decisions?

I'm curious what measures folks have taken to be prepared for things to happen in the middle of the night.

what are you wearing (if anything)? :what:
can you find your glasses, gun, pepper spray, flashlight, shoes, clothes in the dark? Sure
Are you alert enough to make any important life or death decisions? You SHOULD be .. if you don't have good ears and can't wake up .. get DOGS!

All of my SD "items" have been in the same place for about six years. I can find them in the dark no problem. I'm pretty sure that if the alarm was sounding, I'd be very :what: very fast.

If I stumble outta bed at 3:00 ayem, I'm counting on whoever to laugh themselves to death.

Then I'm gonna make coffee.

Then I'm gonna whiz on 'em.

Then I'm gonna take a nap until the coffee kicks in.

Then I'm gonna wonder what that is in the middle of my kitchen.

I leave the tactical sleeping to my dogs. On the nights that I need to do this job my self, I wear my black PJ's, put black sheets on my bed and prop an eyelid open with a toothpick. Just to spice things up a bit, sometimes I wear my OD green underwear to bed. :neener:

"what are you wearing (if anything)?" Pajama trousers and a t-shirt.
"can you find your glasses, gun, pepper spray, flashlight, shoes, clothes in the dark?" No glasses. I can find two guns, one knife, and three flashlights. No need for shoes - all carpet in the apartment.
"Are you alert enough to make any important life or death decisions?"
I reckon so. If somebody breaks into my place, they'd better have a heck of an excuse (or Darth Vader). Got a nice shrill alarm, all doors double-dead-bolted, all inner doors locked. All precautions (except dogs) taken. Plenty of tools.

Sleeps nekkid, pants all set to go w/gun & spare mag in holster/carrier in the same position on floor every night & shoes are also in same position every night. If need be I can just reach down & grab the gun, if I feel I have some time I'll pants & shoes up.

I have a hard time getting out of bed most days but if something spooks me awake then it might as well be noon on a bright sunny day.

I'm fortunate in that I wake instantly. If the phone rings, I answer it on the first ring and can have a coherent conversation, analyze information and make rational decisions. Same thing for other events that wake me.

I just keep the glasses, gun, phone, and flashlight in the same place on the nightstand. I figure, I won't shoot what I can't see, and I'd like to get some backup on the way as fast as possible.

I find these hypopathetical posts quite amusing but I'll play anyway.
I live in a secluded rural area with layered security. Including a driveway alarm, motion sensors and lights, 2 dogs, and a good quality home security system.
I probably have time to wake up, grab the go-to surefire and Glock from the bedside, dress appropriately and then investigate. I don't bother to get up for every bump in the night. It's usually a racoon knocking a flower pot over on the porch.
Besides, if somebody wakes up the household, they would probably rather deal with me than the wife.

I will wake up ultra-pissed, at 3 am. Heaven help those who woke me up because I sure won't. Firewatch is a great tool for complete arousal from dead sleep. Try pushing when you can't recite your General Orders after you just woke up. Keeps the mind working.

If I'm in a "tactical" situation, I sleep very lightly. My subconscious knows there is danger. If not, I sleep soundly. I don't know what you could do other than freak yourself out before bed.

That's why Remington makes the 870 with a 20" barrel.
Really?

They make shotguns with barrels that long?

PS: What I'm wearing while sleeping depends on who I'm with.

I stopped sleeping with my boots on and an arm through my LBE and rifle sling after I retired from the Army. I don't even make the kids stand watch anymore and I quit making the family do stand to at BMNT and EENT. I must be totally unprepared these days. :uhoh:

Look, everyone has to be in condition white sometime. You can't live for extended periods of time in condition yellow or higher. The stress will eventually kill you.

If you don't have a place where you can go to be in condition white then you need to find one. And no you don't need to have a rifle platoon around you before it's safe.

Tactical sleeping....If you do a search, you'll find all kinds of threads on making your home more secure. I'm closing this one. The entire premise of tactical sleeping is silly.
