Debating switching my main ’get work done’ AR upper from an 18” rifle length 5.56, to an 18” rifle length 6.5 Grendel. I’d like to see first how common it would be to come across ammo without ordering online.

I was going to build a 18" 5.56 but the grendel makes much more sense. I'm looking for a nice medium weight 18" 6 .5 barrel that's adorable. Or just do a 16" m4 grendel. Then there's the 6mm arc coming out.

Yeah that’s part of the issue. There’s a lot of up in the air possibilities. 6mm ARC, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8spc, or if the army truly goes with a 6.8 diameter bullet.

Something tells me there will be one victor, but I don’t want to invest until I figure out which will win. I’d like to say 6.5 Grendel is gaining steam, but whatever the army ends up going with may squash it’s momentum

Barrels are fairly cheap and with a few bolt heads you can cover pretty much all of them. If the mili does standardize one I don't see ammo getting much cheaper then steel case 6.5grendel. I think hornady is going to make a run with the arc.

My lgs carries hornady and another brand in various bullet weights and styles. More importantly to me they stock a nice variety of powders and projectiles that work with the grendel. I wouldn't wait around waiting for one to be declared king, get a grendel and go shooting. I like mine.

Is hand loading an option? Not trying to side track too much, but if your itching to get started, loading your own eliminates the availability issue a lot. You can make what you want. It’s how I got started into 10mm auto and 38 Super. You can also tune a great load to your gun also.

If not, I’ll just share that my LGS’s do stock Grendel regularly. Not a big selection but it’s available.

I handload for lots of rifles I shoot. But for something that’s more utilitarian, I prefer both retail and handloading to be an option

Academy here stocks 2 different loads, they are usually $20, another store has 3 different loads starting at $20 and up, I reload and the first load with the price of brass is around $.75 if you catch everything on sale after that about $.40. Sometimes sale prices on 200rnds is about $150. I've not seen any steel case ammo in local stores.

I think I might have seen a tag for some at the local Fleet as I walked by.

But I handload pretty much everything these days so I wasn't looking close.

I was just in my local Sportsman's Warehouse. TONS of 6.5 Grendel on the shelf. Almost NOTHING else on the shelf.

Local stores all have Hornady Grendel ammo about same price as other hunting ammo. Academy usually has some steel cased about $7, though not tons of it. Online the steel loads are readily available close to 223 costs so it's certainly reasonable. From what I've seen and heard the 100 grain Wolf is pretty decent accuracy for the cost.

of the three stores within "don't have to make a Special trip" range, just one tries to keep 6.5 Grendel in stock, at least partly because they're the most AR focused of the three. other two are a small shop with a focus on selling CCW guns and classes, and a former feed store that seems to be surviving on a rural customer base reluctant to drive into either of the nearest two larger cities.

If i were to drive an hour to an hour and a half and hit one of the larger shops in the immediate suburbs, or a big box sporting goods place like Academy. I could find plenty as well. that said last time I looked locally 6.8spc was still more abundant than Grendel.

It may not be on the shelf with the popular kids but yes, most of my local shops carry Grendel ammo. One store keeps it in the back with other odd balls like 32 S&W. Even big box stores like Academy and Bass Pro in my area have 6.5

Yep, wandered in the other day and the local Fleet does stock 6.5 Grendel. Hornady Black, American Eagle and Federal Fusion.

Also, yep, you got me convinced I need a Grendel too.

Looked at my lgs and yes they had a few boxes of 6.5 G. I also looked at Walmart of course they didn't, but they had 350 Legend. The LGS had a nice little Taurus m44 44 mag I'm glad I didn't have the cash in my pocket or I would have bought it! No more impulse buyso_O

If you're thinking that seriously about getting a 6.5 Grendel I encourage you to just do it and don't look back. You will probably grow old and frustrated waiting on the Army. There are a lot of options out there. I'm not implying it is the best cartridge ever, sure there are lots of options out there, but who is to say which one will really take off. It is a fairly popular cartridge right now, you can buy loaded ammunition and components without much looking. If you get yourself set up now you can get into serious housekeeping that much sooner.

I wouldnt even consider LGS availability since you cant buy 223 at stores now.

Buy what you think is the best gun for the job that you can still afford to feed for practice.

The LGS availability thing only comes into play for me for guns you need to fly with in case ammo gets confiscated for some reason or the scope is roasted and you need to sight in pre hunt.

6.5 Grendel is excellent. I just bought a 20 inch upper from Grendel Hunter. Amazing quality and features. Waiting on a BCG and mags. I mounted a Weaver Tactical 3-15x50 optic. Have some Hornady Black ELD rounds.
