I was going to take my SKS out whitetail hunting this year, but pops decided that since he had never formally bought me a rifle when I was a young 'un, he wanted to get me a rifle in a caliber he'd heard nothing but good things about: 7mm-08. So after doing a bit of searching, I suggested the Stevens model 200 - pops isn't a wealthy guy, and even the Stevens was a little more than he wanted to pay, but hey, gotta do it right even if it's late.

So last Tuesday we placed the order with Bud's Gun Shop - after trying to get through to the Internet sales department, we finally resorted to the retail store, where a wonderful lady was kind enough to go to the shipping department and make sure that the rifle got shipped out that day. Needless to say, I am nothing but impressed with Bud's service. Don't think twice about ordering from those guys.

At any rate, the Stevens made it here last Friday. I finally got it scoped yesterday, initially with a 3-9x40 Remington scope I had from who knows where. After a good hour at the range I gave up on that scope and finally stuck the vintage Weaver K4 on it. In no time I had the thing zeroed at 50 yards. Big thumbs up to Weaver scopes. What a value.

Here she is - to me, one of, if not the best value hunting rifle you can buy. I am seriously considering getting another Stevens in .223, .308, or .30-06. The rifle itself was $316 after a $20 transfer fee.

My dad and I are going out tomorrow evening and Thanksgiving morning, then again on Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully we see something - this little Stevens deserves to take a deer.
