Talk to me about a .22

I have several bolt action rimfires, none as nice as a CZ but mostly older ones like Remingtons & Marlins and most of em will outshoot my Ruger America Rimfire compact 18". I like the Ruger for what it is but at today's prices I'd pass. While Savages can be hit or miss, they're usually good value for the money.
If you can swing a CZ, you won't be dissapointed.

I am a member of Rimfire Central and have seen the pissing contests between Savage and CZ owners over there. Yes I am just an example of one. But out of all the CZ 22lr rifles I have shot, none of them outshot the Savage MkII rifles with the heavy varmint barrel that I own. In fact both brands shot the same for me. Others will have a different experience from mine.

I am not bashing CZ rifles by any means. But I personally can't justify spending more money when the Savage rifles shoot well for me. I would rather save some money on a rifle that shoots accurately to put towards better scopes or more ammo.

Same here. I shot in the Prove it Thread, did okay but was not really finished and got side tracked and I guess forgot about it. As to that Rimfire Central, it like several internet forums I have found to have a common theme, much like the Marlin Owner Forum, only ________ (fill in blank) is worthy and everything else is junk and if one disagrees they get banned or ridiculed. It is why I like the High Road, there is room for diversity of opinion. In many an informal match I have bested a fellow with a CZ. I would like to make a good CZ my next purchase if I could quit buying Marlin lever guns! I actually went to purchase one and instead came home with another Marlin 1895 :(. But it remains for me, that the two most accurate rifles I own or have shot, one is a Savage .22 and the other is a Marlin .17 HMR. Some day I will buy my Marlin 917 a decent scope and I can then see what it really can do but it is scary accurate even with a bubble pack BSA (reticle is too thick) and cheap mounts.

One hundred yards in a Kansas breeze crossing, the black dots, three shots each:

I took it to an indoor range (to get out of the never ending wind) with 100 yard targets and it was boringly stacking bullets.

Someday I also hope to purchase a CZ .22 rifle, well, unless there is a Marlin on the rack that catches my eye.

As a teen, I had a Savage semi-auto .22LR and shot the snot out of it. By the time I finally decided to target the amazing killing machine, I was astounded that it wouldn't group better than 8" at 25 yards, barely keeping the shots on an 8x11" sheet of paper! A year before, it was shooting great! Soft steel in a very cheap semi-auto! However, as a varmint-hunting, rat shooting dump rifle, it still was viable. However, because I was suddenly aware of it's poor accuracy, in my mind, I couldn't keep it!

It was traded-in the next day and I bought a .22 rimfire Marlin Mountie, with didn't point-shoot thrown targets worth a darn, but punched very tight-groups on paper. It also kept a drunk from breaking-in to my girlfriend's apartment...leaving when he saw the rifle pointing his way. He was actually a neighbor in another similar building across the road, and up the street a few, but they didn't know each other.

I am in the market for a .22 rimfire bolt action rifle. I have given away my last Classic but need one in the safe. Price range is $350 tops without optics. Use will be field and fun but mostly 50 yard bench rest occasional informal precision shooting. I would love a 16.5/18” or so heavy barrel preferably threaded but that is not a must. My son has a Ruger American which is a great rifle, nice shooter but not a fan of the 22” barrel. Have shot a Savage Mark 2, I liked it but it was fairly customized and not comparable with off the shelf models. There are so many options lately like Rossi and dozens of Savage Models for nice prices that it makes it a bit hard to narrow a model down. Any suggestions? Experience with a modern tack driver that maybe is a unknown gem? Thanks

Check out the CZ models. I have one and it shoots well. Savages often shoot well, but I don't like the exterior finishes much. The Ruger American is pretty nice.

Your budget doesn't seem to allow a CZ. ----But I've posted this link in case somebody else is unfamiliar with CZ quality----.

A friend from Germany really likes his fairly new CZ .22 LR. I've never used it and can't remember which iron sights it has.

Rifles - CZ-USA

To be crystal clear, I now carry a CZ PCR, and also freq. use a VZ-58 rifle.

If I wanted a quality modern .22 rifle requiring a larger budget, I would order a CZ -- with no previous handling of any  -- and all I really know is which company designed and produced them.

Technically, @wcwhitey has made his choice and it's a good one by all accounts. When threads go long, good responses get lost because, let's face it, many don't read the preceding posts before responding. If others have recommendations or want recommendations, please start a thread that sets out your criteria or thoughts. Same if you come across a little known gem or disappointment from a highly regarded brand. This thread had a happy ending, and hopefully yours will too.

It's really hard to beat a Ruger semi-auto rifle for all-around use. I like the bull-barreled model and have an after-market Shilen barrel on mine. It's easy to change barrels using either Ruger or other makes. They're not as expensive as other rifle's replacement barrels because they're so common.
I have an old one that shoots pretty good. I put a bull barrel on it about 25 years ago. Not far behind my CZ's. I bought one last year for my grandson. I recently mounted a Burris scope on it and we went to the range. The little guy put every shot in about a nickel size group at 25 yards. He was so happy he shot up lots of ammo. Sure made an old man happy.

Bergara BMRs are really a high quality bargain. Here's one that is being offered for $499 with the option of offering less. It is threaded for a suppressor. I'm considering buying one just to give it a try. A guy I've been corresponding with swears by his. Looks great, shoots great, good trigger. I've had Rugers and have two Bergara rimfires. I like the Bergara much better.

Played the old see what shoots best with what I have laying around in Saturday with the new CZ457 Synthetic Just a patch down the barrel and wipe down. Liked the Aquila Target Competition the best (top center and right). Top left was Fowler and sighting shots. .41 was best group. Scope was a BSA Sweet .22 4x12 that was a take off from an older build. CCI Standard will be a budget purchase. My sons Ruger American loved that round. Shooting was from a Caldwell Bipod
No other support 50 yards. Was impressed with the scope for what it is. The reticle was not too thick and fairly precise, the factory yardage elevation was spot on for the 40 grain bullets. Zeroed the gun earlier in the week indoors at 15 yards went to range turned it up to 50 and was spot on. The only complaint is that the length of pull could be a bit more (I am 6’2”) and the weight was a bit light. I don’t want bench rest heavy but it could use some heft. A Boyd’s will be on the Christmas list.
I did have a funny interaction at the range. Next to me was a nice gentleman who I struck up a conversation with. He was shooting the Ruger America Target with bill barrel and Ruger chassis. Nice gun. We started talking about ammo. He did comment that my barrel was too skinny (Polish Accent). I said it’s shooting good for what it is. Went forward to compare targets and he wanted all the information on my rifle.
The Rifle with ammo it likes is outstanding. Very Happy with the pick up. I will give it detailed cleaning, check all the torque specs and maybe slip on a recoil pad to add an inch to the stock for the short term. Thought some would like a range report.

Excellent report. Good shooting. It will get better I would expect.
Thanks it’s the beginning of the process. First find ammo it likes, get used to the gun. Adjust the trigger a bit (it’s out of the box), make some tweaks. I am quite pleased, thankful for the thoughtful recommendations. I would have normally picked up a project and spent a ton of time and money to get it to shoot like it did out of the box. Although I also enjoy the build process it still has a bit of room for me to tinker.

Ruger Precision Rimfire has become my 1st choice for such. Shooting plastic army dudes, Dum Dums, matches and sideways playing cards at extreme distances (for 22LR).
